Cancer group plans 5K run/walk Saturday

One local organization intends to give cancer a run for its money.

The Franklin County Cancer Foundation has planned its sixth annual ?On the Move for Cancer? 5K run/walk. Registration is planned for 6:30 a.m. Saturday at Kanza Park, 200 W. 15th St., Ottawa, with the race beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Money raised from registration fees will go to help Franklin County cancer patients, Heidi Kingsolver, president of the organization, said. Last year?s race raised about $9,500, and with 186 participants already registered, the foundation is on track to pass that mark, she said.

?We just hit a record this year,? Kingsolver said. ?We had 184 last year at race time with lots of walk-ups, so we?re hoping for 250 this year.?

The nonprofit foundation has seen much support for this year?s event, Kingsolver said. Sponsorships have raised more than $7,000 in monetary donations and prizes throughout the year. Participating in this event, Kingsolver said, is a great way to show support for those in the area who are suffering from cancer.

?We give 94 to 96 percent of our funds back to the Franklin County cancer patients in need with financial support, gas and grocery cards,? Kingsolver said of the organization. ?We supply medical equipment, wigs, nutritional drinks at no cost to patients. Our requirements are that you live in Franklin County and you have cancer.?

Last year, the organization helped more than 100 local cancer patients with funds totalling almost $60,000, she said.
