The top immigration headlines for July 2012 were diverse, involving a number of states in the western part of the country.

States in the news for immigration-related stories in July included Arizona, Washington and California. But some recently released statistics involved the entire country. You can continue reading to find out more about these immigration stories for July 2012.

1. 14 Die After Overcrowded, Immigrant-Carrying Truck Crashes Near Texas Border

On July 22, a pickup truck carrying 23 passengers crashed into a tree while traveling near South Texas, killing 14. According to Fox News Latino, many of the passengers were illegal immigrants, and two of the deceased were children. When authorities showed up, 11 of the passengers were already dead, and three more passed away at local hospitals. Many of the victims were from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala, but authorities are still investigating whether the driver of the overloaded truck was smuggling immigrants into the US.

2. Apprehensions for immigration violations drop to lowest level in 40 years; arrests up

An Associated Press article in the Washington Post reported that the number of federal immigration violations is currently the lowest it has been in about 40 years. Some of the reasons cited include the poor economy of the US., the lower birthrate in Mexico and enforcement of immigration policies at the border. At the same time, the number of criminal immigration offenses is higher than ever, likely due to the increased enforcement efforts by authorities in the US.

3. Nation?s first ?anti-Arizona? law likely headed to Gov. Jerry Brown?s office

According to Matt O?Brien of the Contra Costa Times, California passed a law that is being touted as the ?anti-Arizona? bill. The California Trust Act states that illegal immigrants do not have to be detained if they have not committed any serious offenses. This means that immigrating illegally will not be a serious enough crime to be detained or deported in California. Though the Senate passed the law, it needs to pass a concurrent vote by the legislature on August 6. It is unknown whether Gov. Jerry Brown will approve the bill.

4. ?State may use federal immigration data in checking voters? eligibility

According to Lornet Turnbull of The Seattle Times, Washington is one of the most recent states that the Department of Homeland Security has given access to an immigration database. This could help officials determine who is eligible to vote, since the database features basic information on more than 100 million legal citizens of this country. The database is called Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE), and officials could use it to make sure foreign students and those who have green cards or work visas do not vote since they are not legally allowed to.

5. Arpaio testifies in civil rights trial

Joe Arpaio, who is the well-known Maricopa County, Arizona, sheriff behind SB-1070, took the stand in a civil rights trial. According to CBS5, Sheriff Arpaio and his deputies have been accused of racially profiling. He has consistently denied the charge, but it is likely that several witnesses will testify that he and his officers have engaged in racial profiling. The ACLU is representing the plaintiffs involved in the case.

Duke Energy's Jim Rogers to speak at Raleigh Power Breakfast

Duke Energy Corp. Chief Executive Jim Rogers will speak at the Triangle Business Journal's Power Breakfast event on Sept. 27.

Duke Energy Corp.'s embattled chief executive will keynote an upcoming Power Breakfast event for the Charlotte Business Journal's sister publication in Raleigh.

The event will be among Jim Rogers' first public appearances in the state's capital city since Charlotte-based Duke (NYSE:DUK) merged with Raleigh's Progress Energy Inc.

Former Progress Chief Executive Bill Johnson had been slated to run the combined company, but in a surprise turn of events, the company's board pushed Johnson out and reinstated Rogers. Inquiries into the circumstances around the ouster are ongoing.

Rogers is expected to discuss his plan for the merged company, the company's vision for its Raleigh operations, and Duke's commitment to philanthropy in the Triangle area.

The Triangle Business Journal will host the event on Sept. 27 at the Raleigh Marriott City Center. The cost to attend is $50, including breakfast. Networking begins at 7 a.m. Rogers will speak at 8 a.m., with a question-and-answer session following. More information is available at www.bizjournals.com/triangle/event/66491.

Scenes from an Underground Fight Show in New York City

Earlier today there was an edition of the Underground Combat League (UCL), New York City's long-running, unsanctioned MMA promotion.? Unlike most of the other states in the country, New York has deemed professional MMA to be illegal.? But a loophole in the law has allowed amateur events to flourish ? albeit in a quasi-hush-hush world where fighters sometimes use aliases and the locations of shows are kept secret from the athletic commission.?

Please, don't judge them too harshly.? The UCL, for instance, has churned out over forty events since its debut in 2003, and can count among its alumni such fighters as former UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and International Fight League heavyweight Bryan Vetell (as well as a slew of dudes who went on to fight in Strikeforce, the WEC, Bellator and top regional promotions).? And before you accuse anyone of exploitation, remember this: everyone from promoter Peter Storm to the fighters to the fans wants to see New York State sanction the sport; it's only because New York won't that events like this exist.

You're probably about to ask something along the lines of "Well, don't you think underground shows like this one are setting the sport back and keeping it from being sanctioned?"? That's a clown-question, bro.? The politicians who favor MMA in New York have cited the state's thriving underground fight scene as a reason why the sport must be sanctioned.

Wu and her partner He Zi won the first diving gold medal of the London Olympics on Sunday, putting the country on a path toward a possible sweep of the eight medals.

They led throughout the five-dive round and totaled 346.20 points in the 3-meter synchronized event.

"It's kind of if they mess up, then you have an opportunity," American silver medalist Abby Johnston said. "Anything can happen in this sport, so you still have that possibility."

It was Wu's fifth Olympic medal, leaving her one away from tying countrywoman Guo Jingjing's record of six medals. Guo was China's superstar diver until her retirement 1 1/2 years ago.

Wu has three golds, one silver and one bronze. She could earn another in the individual springboard event, where she has medaled twice before and will compete against He.

"It feels normal," Wu said in Mandarin. "I really don't have that many emotions."

China won seven of eight golds as the host country four years ago in Beijing and swept the golds at last year's world championships in Shanghai.

"I am impressed by them," Johnston said. "I watch their video. That's one of my training methods, just watching them and how they do it."

Johnston and Kelci Bryant finished second with 321.90 points, ending the country's diving medal drought that extended to the 2000 Sydney Games. It was the first-ever Olympic synchro medal for the Americans.

"Our curse is out of the way," said Bryant, who finished fourth in springboard synchro with a different partner in Beijing.

"Abby and I just kicked it off with this event and I think the rest of the team is going to come through," she said. "After 2008, all of us were really close and we needed to fine-tune our training."

Laura Wilkinson's gold on 10-meter platform in Sydney, where she upset the Chinese despite a broken foot, was the last U.S. medal. The Americans were shut out for the first time ever four years later in Athens and again in Beijing.

U.S. lets Myanmar import ban expire, at least temporarily

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. ban on imports from Myanmar expired on Thursday, at least temporarily, because of a clash between lawmakers over funding for an African trade measure.

The two issues are tied together in a bill that has the backing of the Obama administration and that lawmakers hope to pass before their month long August recess.

The White House has eased some sanctions on Myanmar, also known by its colonial name of Burma, in response to economic and political reforms. It does not favor lifting the import ban yet.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell proposed separating the two measures so the ban on imports from Myanmar could be renewed.

But Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, a Democrat, objected on the grounds that it would jeopardize approval of the African trade measure, which he said was vital to clothing industry jobs on the continent.

He rejected McConnell's charge that Democrats were turning renewal of sanctions on Myanmar "into a partisan issue" after years of strong support from both parties.

Baucus said he hoped to worked with Senator Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, in coming days to address his concerns about funding for the African trade provision.

The African Growth and Opportunity Act, first passed by Congress in 2000, allows eligible countries in sub-Saharan Africa to ship thousands of goods to the United States without paying import duties.

A provision that expires September 30 waives duties on clothing from most African Growth and Opportunity Act countries, even if the yarn or fabric is made in a "third country" like China, South Korea or Vietnam.

Coburn has objected to the use of U.S. Customs Service user fees spread out over 10 years to pay for the $200 million cost of the trade bill.

Those are the types of provisions that have created a huge mountain of U.S. government debt, he said.

It?s only been two months since wide-receiver-turned-hoofer Donald Driver claimed the coveted mirror ball trophy on ?Dancing With the Stars,? bringing a glittering end to the last season of the ballroom bash. But even though it hasn?t been a big wait, the anticipation for the upcoming season has been huge.

That?s because season 15 isn?t just another round of the same old show. It?s ?Dancing?s? long-awaited all-star season -- the one fans have hoping for and speculating about for ages.

Now that speculation is over. On Friday the returning competitors were revealed.

The ballroom alums soon set to take the dance floor again are:

• Shawn Johnson
• Bristol Palin
• Pamela Anderson
• Apolo Anton Ohno
• Joey Fatone
• Kelly Monaco
• Gilles Marini
• Emmitt Smith
• Drew Lachey
• Kirstie Alley
• Helio Castroneves
• Melissa Rycroft

But that?s not all! While those 12 celebs make up most of the official all-star cast, there?s one more returning soft shoe set to join them. Who?ll take spot No. 13? That?s up to ballroom fans. In a first-of-its-type twist for the show, ?Dancing? viewers are being asked to vote for the past participate of their choosing to fill the final spot. The choices include Sabrina Bryan, Carson Kressley or Kyle Massey.

Details on that twist are still to come on the official ?Dancing With the Stars? website.

Though partners have not yet been announced, executive producer Conrad Green told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Friday that the pros will be revealed on Aug. 13. But don't expect that all the stars will get the same pro they had before.

"Obviously, when you look at the stars that are coming back, it's impossible for everybody to have the same partner, so we're currently working that out," Green said. "We're trying to pair people based upon what we think is going to make the most intriguing season and make a brilliant season."

Green also explained how the producers chose this particular group to do "All Stars." "We took the view we wanted to do the best of the best. We wanted to represent many different seasons," he said. "For us, this is almost our version of 'The Avengers.' These were the superheroes of their particular seasons, and they're back."?

Though the cast will be familiar, don't expect the show to be exactly the same. Green teased that there will be some tweaks to the ballroom bash this season. For starters, he noted that the judges will likely have to be recalibrated a bit, "otherwise, we'll be starting with 9s and 10s right out of the box." He also hinted that the show might introduce a few new things to update the competition.

The season premieres Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. on ABC. And for those of you who can't wait to see at least one these returning hopefuls on your small screen, keep your eye out for Shawn at the Olympics, where she's acting as TODAY.com's special correspondent.?

Cooking With Coffee | Coffee Grounds to Ground

Coffee is a wonderful food product that is great for more than just brewing into a caffeinated drink.

With all the different varieties and flavours of coffee beans, they lend themselves perfectly well to making your dinner entrees and desserts sing.

Here are just a few of the ways that you can easily incorporate coffee into your next meal.

Mocha Desserts

How many times have you brewed a full pot of coffee only to have some left over? If you hate throwing out the last cup or two of brewed coffee, don?t. Save it (pouring it into ice cube trays and freezing is ideal) and use it to flavour mocha desserts such as tortes and cream pies.

A really simple way to add mocha flavouring to a popular dessert? Simply add a few spoonfuls to confectioner?s sugar and beat until smooth then use it to ice the tops of cupcakes.

Here?s an extra dessert idea: toss roasted coffee beans with melted chocolate to make a sweet snack with a jolt.

Iced Beverages

Here?s another great use for previously brewed coffee ? add it to milk, ice cream and a squirt of chocolate syrup in a blender for a milkshake with a bit of added pizzazz.

If you don?t want to mess up the kitchen, simply add sugar or a flavoured syrup and pour over a tall glass of ice.

Meats

Coffee makes the basis of a really tasty rub for a good, juicy steak.

Simply start with ground coffee, or coarsely grind your own fresh beans.

Flavoured coffee works very well and gives the rub just a hint of sweetness. Then mix it with your favourite spices, such as paprika, black pepper, garlic and onion powders, and rub it all over the rinsed, dry surface of the meat.

Quickly pan fry the steaks in really hot oil (or butter for added decadence) and you?ve got the basis for a truly delicious supper. This is also a great way to transform cheaper cuts of meat into something special.

For the truly adventurous cook, you may want to try making a coffee rub for fish fillets, too. Add the ground coffee to finely chopped pecans and fresh herbs plus a bit of lemon juice for a flavour perfect for any type of fish.

These are just some of the ways you can take the same coffee you enjoy drinking and use it to flavour the various parts of a meal. Don?t be afraid to experiment; chances are you can come up with your own delicious ways to use coffee for cooking.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? New government data shows only a quarter of Americans with the AIDS virus have the infection under control. Young people and blacks are least likely to get effective care.

That's slightly lower than previous estimates, and means more than 800,000 people aren't benefiting from life-saving drugs that also would lower their level of infection.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that's because nearly 20 percent don't know they're infected, and only two-thirds who are diagnosed are linked to a doctor. It says poverty and lack of insurance are the main barriers.

Just 15 percent of 25- to 34-year-olds have gotten the virus to low levels, less than half the rate of 50-somethings. And 1 in 5 African-Americans had the virus suppressed, compared with 30 percent of whites.

The family of a teacher who fell to her death while sliding down a banister at he Palmer House Hilton in 2010 has filed a lawsuit against the hotel and the hosts of the event she was attending.

James and Deborah Duskey, the parents of Megan Duskey, filed a lawsuit Tuesday claiming negligence on the part of the hotel and the hosts of the ball, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Megan Duskey fell four stories while at the Palmer House Hilton's "Haunted Hotel Ball" in October of 2010.

Duskey, who was 23 at the time of her fatal fall, attempted to slide down the railing and fell four stories after losing her balance. She was already dead from head trauma when police arrived at the scene, officials said at the time.

The Palmer House Hilton said it would cooperate fully with a police investigation after the incident, and police ultimately ruled the death an accident.

Duskey was a special education teacher at Orville T.?Bright Elementary School at the time of her fall.

The lawsuit names Hilton Worldwide, the Palmer House Hilton, Surreal Chicago and Adrenaline Y2k as the defendants. It faults the hotel and event hosts for allowing the guests to over indulge in alcohol without providing adequate security.

"Life Is Good" for Nas at No. 1 on Billboard album chart

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hip hop star Nas scored his sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 album chart on Wednesday with "Life Is Good," knocking off last week's chart topper, Zac Brown Band.

"Life Is Good," the 10th studio album from the New York rapper, sold 149,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan. Nas' last solo effort, 2008's "Untitled," also debuted on top of the album chart with 187,000 copies sold.

Country music collective Zac Brown Band dropped to No. 2 with "Uncaged" selling 78,000 copies in its second week of release. The latest album from the Kidz Bop franchise, "Kidz Bop 22," featuring child-friendly versions of pop hits such as The Wanted's "Glad You Came" and Nicki Minaj's "Starships," landed at No. 3 with 64,000.

The fourth debut in the top ten of the chart was the soundtrack for Christopher Nolan's final 'Batman' film, "The Dark Knight Rises," selling 33,000 copies in the week of its release and notching No. 8.

A surprise entry from Phil Collins landed at No. 6 as the veteran rocker's 1998 "...Hits" compilation returned to the chart with 40,000 copies sold, fueled by Amazon MP3 selling the set for 99 cents in a one day offer last week.

The retail website also sold Frank Ocean's "Channel Orange" for $2.99 all week, but according to Billboard chart rules, no album sold for below $3.49 in the first four weeks of release will count towards official album sales figures.

"Channel Orange" dropped to No. 4 this week with 54,000 copies, ahead of Justin Bieber's "Believe" at No. 5, selling 45,000, and One Direction's "Up All Night," which held No. 7 with 36,000 copies.

Rounding out the top ten this week was Adele's "21" at No. 9 and Maroon 5's "Overexposed" at No. 10.

Budget office: Obama's health law reduces deficit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's health care overhaul will shrink rather than increase the nation's huge federal deficits over the next decade, Congress' nonpartisan budget scorekeepers said Tuesday, supporting Obama's contention in a major election-year dispute with Republicans.

About 3 million fewer uninsured people will gain health coverage because of last month's Supreme Court ruling granting states more leeway, and that will cut the federal costs by $84 billion, the Congressional Budget Office said in the biggest changes from earlier estimates.

Republicans have insisted that "Obamacare" will actually raise deficits ? by "trillions," according to presidential candidate Mitt Romney. But that's not so, the budget office said.

The office gave no updated estimate for total deficit reductions from the law, approved by Congress and signed by Obama in 2010. But it did estimate that Republican legislation to repeal the overhaul ? passed recently by the House ? would itself boost the deficit by $109 billion from 2013 to 2022.

"Repealing the (health care law) will lead to an increase in budget deficits over the coming decade, though a smaller one than previously reported," budget office director Douglas Elmendorf said in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

The law's mix of spending cuts and tax increases would more than offset new spending to cover uninsured people, Elmendorf explained.

Tuesday's budget projections were the first since the Supreme Court upheld most of the law last month but gave states the option of rejecting a planned expansion of Medicaid for their low-income residents. As a consequence, the budget office said the law will cover fewer uninsured people.

Thirty million uninsured people will be covered by 2022, or about 3 million fewer than projected this spring before the court ruling, the report said.

As a result, taxpayers will save about $84 billion from 2012 to 2022. That brings the total cost of expanding coverage down to $1.2 trillion, from about $1.3 trillion in the previous estimate.

The Congressional Budget Office has consistently projected that Obama's overhaul will reduce the deficit, although previous estimates aren't strictly comparable with Tuesday's report because of changes in the law and other factors.

At the time it was approved in 2010, CBO estimated the law would reduce the deficit by $143 billion from 2010 to 2019. And CBO estimated that last year's Republican repeal legislation would increase deficits by $210 billion from 2010 to 2021.

That may sound like a lot of money, but it's actually a hair-thin margin at a time when federal deficits are expected to average around $1 trillion a year for the foreseeable future.

When the law is fully in effect, 92 percent of citizens and legal residents are estimated to have coverage, as compared to 81 percent now.

Democrats hailed Tuesday's estimates as vindication for the president. "This confirms what we've been saying all along: the Affordable Care Act saves lots of money," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Actually, the government will spend more. It just won't go onto the national credit card because the health care law will be paid for with a combination of spending cuts and tax increases.

Republicans said they remain unswervingly committed to repealing what they dismiss as "Obamacare." When combined with other budget-cutting measures, GOP leaders say that repeal will ultimately reduce deficits. Romney says if elected he will begin to dismantle the law his first day in office.

Medicaid has been one big question hanging over the future of Obama's law since the Supreme Court ruled.

Some GOP-led states, such as Texas and Florida, say they will not go forward with the expansion. Others are uncommitted, awaiting the voters' verdict on Obama in November.

Although the federal government would bear all of the initial cost of that expansion, many states would have to open their Medicaid programs to low-income childless adults for the first time.

CBO analysts did not try to predict which specific states would jump in and which would turn down the Medicaid expansion. Instead, they assumed that many states would eventually cut deals with the federal government to expand their programs to some degree.

As a result, the budget office estimates that more than 80 percent of the low-income uninsured people eligible under the law live in states that partially or fully expand their programs.

The big coverage expansion under the law doesn't start until 2014, with middle-class uninsured people signing up for subsidized private plans and more low-income people picked up through Medicaid.

Cylindrical cell structure parts may aid in targeting diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Researchers are studying how components of cell structure function in order to determine viable ways to use them for fighting such ailments as cancer, Huntington's, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's diseases.

Jianhua Xing, a Virginia Tech assistant professor of biology, and his colleagues did computational studies to compare the mechanical properties of two alternative models of the assembly of rope-like polymers called microtubules, a component of cell cytoskeletons. The researchers' objectives are to learn how microtubules are regulated and how they assemble and disassemble.

"We want to understand the structure and regulation of microtubules because they are not static; they are always moving as they transport things in the cell," said Xing, who also is an affiliated researcher with Fralin Research Institute. "But there are discrepancies between two models of how microtubules work that also are contradictory to experiments."

The model of microtubule assembly that most people accept shows the individual subunits, dimers of the protein tubulin, just adding to the grow cylinder. But another model indicates that tubulin dimmers first form an open sheet structure that later closes into the cylinder. Xing and his team concluded that their computational study of the models indicate that the second model should be seriously considered for further testing.

The report of the work by Xing, Eva Nogales, and Zhanghan Wu appears in the June issue of Biophysical Journal.

Nogales, a structural biologists and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at University of California, Berkeley, was instrumental in developing the latter model. She said the dynamic instability of microtubules is a crucial property for their function in cells and although much is known about microtubules, scientists still don't understand what governs their assembly and disassembly processes.

"Our paper in Biophysical Journal is a step forward for the field, demonstrating that certain aspects in the biophysical behavior of microtubules that previously have been probed experimentally can better be explained by a new model of microtubule assembly that involves two distinct types of tubulin-tubulin lateral interactions."

Knowing the interactions and the regulation will impact how microtubules can be used to develop drugs that could more precisely target cells involved in various diseases.

"If nature invokes the two interactions in which part of the microtubule is flattened, then it may show us the function and regulation of these structures," Xing said.

The researchers have suggested that additional experiments should be performed on both models to determine more exactly the function and regulation of the microtubules. In the paper they state, "We believe that understanding the properties of the sheet bond holds the potential to guide the design of new tubulin-based drugs that regulate microtubule dynamics by uniquely proving that tubulin interface."

Wu, lead author on the paper, was a doctoral candidate in Xing's laboratory at the time of the research. He now is a post-doctoral associate at the National Institutes of Health. The Virginia Tech team was supported by the Thomas F. & Kate Miller Jeffress Memorial Trust and by the National Science Foundation. Participating In Medical Studies To Pay The Bills

Last year was my first full year attempting to be a freelance music journalist. At the end of the year, a local writer friend asked me to come to an undergraduate class she was teaching on ?freelance journalism? to talk to the students about my first year in the game. I was honest with them about my dismal year. Most of them looked sad and defeated. I told them about how, in order to survive, I turned to medical research studies to make money on the side.

They laughed.

I said, ?No, seriously guys, don?t laugh.? I told them I had the number to the research center saved in my cell phone, and that if any of them wanted it, I was happy to share my contact. After class, one young, aspiring freelance journalist approached me for the number. If he decides to pursue this ridiculous career, he?s definitely going to need it.

There are some lucky bastards who discover a way to make freelance writing work, but my first year was a financial nightmare. It was certainly the worst decision I?ve ever made in my life. Even worse than that one time I started a doctoral program in continental philosophy, and worse than that other time I busted a three-point-turn in my 1982 Toyota Corolla at a police roadblock in an attempt to outrun the cops (I was a troubled youth).

By the end of last year, I made closer to $15,000 than $20,000. I reviewed an album for one music website (that shall go unnamed), and many months later an envelope arrived containing a check for $3. After taxes, I brought home about $2.03 for that one. Score! Another music blog paid me $50 to write five posts each week. Major score! The majority of the things I wrote elsewhere paid somewhere between $15 and $50. I wrote a lot, and I didn?t see much of a reward. I spent many nights lying awake in bed ? a bed that took up about ? of the space in my air condition-less studio/office ? sweating, panicking and scheming about how I was going to earn my next $2.03.

It was awful, but I survived. Not by selling words, though. I had to pick up other jobs. I was paid $50 (plus drinks!) to be a bouncer at a neighborhood bar during their Thursday bluegrass nights, and I landed a $10-an-hour part-time gig as a computer lab monitor at a nearby school. But the best supplemental ?job? I found ? because it paid the most and required the least ? was doing medical research studies.

I?d done one before, the summer before I went to grad school, when I was paid $400 by a tobacco research company in Richmond, Virginia (the home of Phillip Morris) to sit in a lab for 8 hours Monday through Friday and, deprived of nicotine, take tests every 30 minutes to determine how badly I craved smoke. Not so badly, really. Truth is, it?s easy not to smoke, especially when you?re getting paid for it. But I never quit, which turned out to be a good thing, because I made almost $2,000 last year doing tobacco-related studies at a university in Philadelphia.

Many of them required me to simply smoke a few cigarettes and watch some short anti-smoking PSAs. Then they?d administer questionnaires to determine which parts of the PSAs were most effective. I?d walk out with $100 in my pocket, which was more than any editors were willing to pay me for my words. But the weirdest test I did required me to take a low-dose of an Alzheimer?s medication every day for one month so they could study how my memory and attention-level was impacted. Luckily, there were no strange side-effects, and I pulled in about $700 cash. Jackpot!

You can do the same in just about any town or city that has a research university. On Craigslist, under the ?jobs? section, go to the ?medical / health? or ?ETC? categories, and there should be several opportunities. Some recent gigs I?ve seen: In New York, they?re looking for women with decreased sexual desire. In Baltimore, you can earn up to $600 for participating in a study investigating trust. UCLA?s looking for people who don?t smoke, and they?re offering $177 plus an Amazon gift card! And, as always, Philadelphia?s on the hunt for cigarette smokers.

Here?s a pro-tip for those pursuing tobacco research money: If, like me, you roll your own cigarettes, don?t tell them this during the screening process. They want people who smoke name brand cigarettes, so I always said I smoked Marlboros. Also, they normally want people who smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day, so even if you only smoke five (or if you don?t normally smoke any!), pick a number, any number, greater than 10, and go for it! (Yes, I realize fibbing a little could throw off the findings, but when the belly growls?hopefully the scientists are looking at their data and accounting for outliers.)

Researchers report more condom use among teenagers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? More high school students are using condoms than 20 years ago ? but progress has stalled with a lot of work still needed to protect young people from the AIDS virus, government researchers reported Tuesday.

Today, 4 of every 10 new HIV infections occur in people younger than 30, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ? and the teen years, just as youths become sexually active, are key for getting across the safe-sex message.

Using a long-standing survey of high school students' health, the CDC tracked how teen sexual behavior has changed over 20 years. The results are decidedly mixed.

About 60 percent of sexually active high school students say they used a condom the last time they had sex, researchers told the International AIDS Conference. That's an improvement from the 46 percent who were using condoms in 1991.

"This is good news," said Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of CDC's HIV prevention center. But, "we need to do a lot more."

The problem: Condom use reached a high of 63 percent back in 2003.

Black students are most likely to heed the safe-sex message, yet their condom use dropped from a high of 70 percent in 1999 to 65 percent last year, the study found.

If mom and dad get antsy about discussing condoms, well, about half of high school students have had sex, a proportion that hasn't changed much over the two decades, the CDC reported. Today, 47 percent say they've had sex, down just a bit from 54 percent in 1991. Again, black teens made the most progress, with 60 percent sexually active today compared with 82 percent two decades ago.

The more partners, the more risk. Fifteen percent of high school students say they've had four or more partners, down from 19 percent in 1991.

Fenton said part of the problem is that many school systems don't have strong enough sex education policies that include teaching teens about how to prevent HIV. But he cautioned that the CDC study can't link the abstinence-only policies pushed by Congress through the late 1990s and early 2000s to the stalled progress.

Overall, though, a characteristic of the young is to think they're invincible, Fenton added.

Lawrence Stallworth, 20, of Cleveland can attest that they're not. He learned he was infected with HIV at age 17, when he was a high-school senior, after a hospitalization. A black gay man, he's among one of the nation's highest-risk groups.

He's now an Ohio AIDS activist who works to teach young people that they need to protect themselves, and how.

"I want people to have the tools to keep themselves safe," said Stallworth, who at this week's AIDS conference is working with the nonprofit Advocates for Youth to increase young people's awareness of an epidemic that in the U.S., today gets little publicity.

Part of that involves our society getting "better at being more open about being able to talk about sex," Stallworth added. "It's still a taboo issue."

Indeed, at this week's conference, the world's largest AIDS meeting, young gay black men in the U.S. are emerging as a population in special danger from rising HIV infections.

Black gay and bisexual men account for 1 in 500 Americans but 1 in 4 new HIV infections. The odds that a black man who has sex becomes infected rise from 1 in 4 at age 25 to a stunning 60 percent by age 40, said Phill Wilson of the Black AIDS Institute.

But they're not the only ones at risk. The CDC recommends that everyone in the U.S. ages 13 to 65 be tested for HIV at least once. Those at increased risk ? such as people who have multiple sex partners or men who have sex with men ? should be tested more frequently, at least once a year.

In South Carolina, 18-year-old Quinandria Lee offers an example of the safe sex practices that CDC says more young people should adopt.

Lee was frustrated at her school's abstinence-only focus. She learned about both male and female condoms from the South Carolina Contraceptive Campaign, and last year her principal allowed her to teach her classmates about them. Condoms are the only contraceptive that also protect against HIV infection.

But Lee credits her mother's frank talk about sex with this key protective step: Lee persuaded her boyfriend to go with her to a clinic where both got a clean bill of health before they ever had sex. Still, they use a condom every time.

"It's hard," she said of that get-tested conversation. But "you can't be too sure."

Obama heading to Colorado to meet families of shooting victims

AURORA, Co. (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will travel to Colorado on Sunday to meet with families bereaved in a shooting rampage that left at least 12 dead and 58 wounded at a movie theater in a Denver suburb.

Obama is due to meet with members of the families of the victims -- ranging from six to 51 years of age - who were shot to death in this Denver area suburb when a gunman opened fire on movie goers during a packed premiere of the latest "Batman" film on Friday.

A vigil is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Sunday in front of Aurora city hall, organized by civic, community, and religious leaders.

"We can now start the natural process of grieving and healing," Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan said at a memorial late on Saturday for one young shooting victim: "We're still reeling."

Obama's trip comes as investigators are deepening a probe into the shooter accused of planning the massacre. On Saturday, local and federal authorities disarmed his booby-trapped apartment.

Graduate school dropout James Holmes, 24, was arrested immediately after the fatal spree at the local multiplex.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said the shooting followed months of "calculation and deliberation," as Holmes received a "high volume" of deliveries to both his work and home.

Residents of several nearby buildings were allowed to return home on Saturday, while the red-brick apartment block where Holmes lived remained under evacuation as local and federal authorities completed the painstaking process of disarming the explosives and sifting through evidence.

Sources familiar with the probe said that some 30 shells filled with gunpowder were found in the apartment, together with containers filled with "incendiary liquids" intended to fuel a fire from the initial explosions, as well as bullets meant to ricochet around the apartment.

On Saturday afternoon, the local coroner's officer released the names of the 12 people killed, including those of a six-year-old girl, a young man celebrating his 27th birthday and an aspiring sportscaster who had barely escaped a shooting in a Toronto mall earlier this summer.

The mass shooting stunned the nation, evoking memories of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, 17 miles from Aurora, where two students opened fire and killed 12 students and a teacher.

It also reverberated in the U.S. presidential race. Both President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, toned down their campaigns on Friday, pulled ads from Colorado and dedicated scheduled events to the victims.

Those who witnessed the shooting told of a horrific scene, with dazed victims bleeding from bullet wounds, spitting up blood and crying for help.

Holmes, 24, was arrested minutes later in a parking lot behind the cinema. He was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and a Glock .40-caliber handgun, Oates said. Police found an additional Glock .40-caliber handgun in his car. All the weapons were legally bought in the past 60 days.

Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said the suspect was being held in solitary confinement to protect him from other prisoners, a routine move in high-profile cases.

"THE JOKER"

Holmes, who authorities said had dyed his hair red and called himself "the Joker" in a reference to Batman's comic-book nemesis, was due to make an initial court appearance on Monday.

Little has surfaced from his past to suggest he was capable of such violence.

Until last month, he was studying for a doctoral degree in neuroscience at the University of Colorado's Anschutz Medical School, a few blocks from his apartment.

The University of Colorado Hospital, which treated some of the shooting victims, said 10 people had been released and five remained in critical condition. The Medical Center of Aurora said four of its seven patients remained in the intensive care unit, while three others were on the main trauma floor.

A memorial of flowers, candles and stuffed animals quickly sprung up where the shooting rampage took place. A handwritten sign read: "7/20 gone not forgotten."

At one of the first vigils, some 500 people gathered for a memorial service at Gateway High School on Saturday evening to remember recent graduate A.J. Boik, 18, a talented artist who had been bound for college in the fall.

"He was a very big part of this community," said Tami Avery, 41, whose son played sports with Boik. "He will be dearly missed."

President to comfort families of movie theater victims

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama again steps into the role of consoler-in-chief during a visit Sunday with distraught families of those gunned down in a minute and a half of horror at a midnight movie showing in Aurora, Colo.

While authorities gather evidence on the suspect and the nation tries to fathom what drove the gunman, Obama planned to meet with loved ones struggling with pain and grief.

"We need to embrace them and let them know we will be there for them as a nation," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address.

Aurora's police chief, Dan Oates, told CBS' "Face the Nation" that the families "need that kind of contact by our elected leader. It will be very powerful and it will help them. As awful as what they've been through and what they're going through has been having the president here is very, very powerful."

During the brief visit, just under 2 ? hours, he planned to meet with officials in Aurora, where the shots rang out at a multiplex theater early Friday. Twelve of the victims died, and dozens were injured.

"I think the president coming in is a wonderful gesture," said Aurora's mayor, Steve Hogan. "He's coming in, really, to have private conversations with the families. I think that's totally appropriate."

Hogan told ABC's "This Week" that it "certainly means a lot to Aurora to know that the president cares."

After the Colorado stop, Obama was to fly to San Francisco, where on Monday he'll begin a previously scheduled three-day campaign trip that includes a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Reno, Nev., fundraisers in California, Oregon and Washington state, and a speech to the National Urban League convention in New Orleans.

The shock of Friday's rampage brought the sprawling and sometimes vitriolic presidential campaign to a virtual standstill.

Obama cut short a political trip to Florida to return to Washington. Republican challenger Mitt Romney canceled interviews. Both campaigns pulled ads off the air in Colorado out of respect for the victims.

But with election activities set to resume in the new week, Vice President Joe Biden was to speak to the National Association of Police Organizations in Palm Beach County, Fla., on Monday, and Romney is to address the VFW on Tuesday.

For Obama, the unhappy task of articulating sorrow and loss has become a familiar one.

Indeed, for modern presidents, it's become an accepted facet of the office ? and for some, an opportunity for soaring words that rise above the partisan trench warfare of day-to-day governing.

Not 10 months in office, Obama led mourners at a service for victims of the November 2009 shooting at Texas' Fort Hood. In January of last year, he spoke at a memorial for the six victims killed in Tucson, Ariz., when a gunman attacked Rep. Gabrielle Giffords as she met with constituents.

The following April, when some 300 people were killed in a multi-state series of tornadoes, Obama flew to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to commiserate with residents whose homes were in ruins. A month later, Obama went to Joplin, Mo., after a monster twister claimed 161 lives. This year, he came back on the storm's anniversary to give a commencement speech at Joplin High School.

In between these public observances have been countless private meetings with families of troops who fell in battle in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For Obama, the Colorado visit was to be his second in just over three weeks. Last month, he flew to Colorado Springs to share the pain of homeowners whose houses had been turned to charred heaps by a record outbreak of wildfires.

Obama had already been a frequent Colorado visitor, which is no surprise given the state's key role in his re-election bid. He won the state by more than 8 percentage points over Republican nominee John McCain four years ago. But neither Obama's nor Romney's camp expects that big a margin this time. Recent polls place Obama's lead inside the margin of error.

But for one more day, at least, electoral considerations remained on the back burner.

"This weekend I hope everyone takes some time for prayer and reflection," Obama said in his Saturday broadcast, "for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."
