UK police demand Assange leave Ecuador embassy

Miguel Medina / AFP - Getty Images, file

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange arrives for a hearing at the Supreme Court in London on February 2.

By msnbc.com and news services

LONDON - British police summoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to a London police station on Thursday as part of his extradition process, demanding he leave Ecuador's embassy where he has been holed up seeking political asylum.

Assange, 40, is wanted for questioning in Sweden over sex crime allegations and took refuge in Ecuador's London embassy in a surprise move last week.

He now risks being arrested the moment he steps outside the red-brick building after breaching bail terms, keeping both his supporters and police puzzled as to what he might do next.

On Thursday, police said it had formally "served a surrender notice upon a 40-year-old man that requires him to attend a police station at date and time of our choosing."

WikiLeaks' Assange says Ecuador 'quite supportive'

It added: "He remains in breach of his bail conditions, failing to surrender would be a further breach of conditions and he is liable to arrest."

The statement, in line with UK police policy, did not name him but local media quoted sources identifying him as Assange.

The BBC reported the extradition unit delivered a note to both Assange and the Ecuador embassy. The embassy declined to?comment. Other media reported that he was due to present himself to a police station on Friday.

Assange enraged Washington in 2010 when his WikiLeaks website published secret U.S. diplomatic cables.

He denies any wrongdoing in Sweden and says he fears that if extradited there he could be sent on to the United States, where he could face criminal charges punishable by death.

After losing his appeal against extradition to Sweden to face allegations against rape and sexual assault, The Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, says he is considering his next step, which could be an appeal to Britain's Supreme Court. ITN's Sejal Karia reports.

Assange, known for his unpredictable behavior, caused a media storm in Britain with his asylum bid. Ecuador's ambassador has in the meantime flown home to discuss whether to grant him asylum but the decision has yet to be made.

By diplomatic convention, police cannot enter the embassy without authorization from Ecuador. But even if Quito granted him asylum, he has no way of travelling to Ecuador without passing through London and exposing himself to arrest.

WikiLeaks' Assange seeks asylum in Ecuador?

On Tuesday, a group of celebrities and activists published an open letter to Ecuador published in The Guardian newspaper asking that Assange be given?asylum?in that country because he faced the death penalty if eventually sent to the United States.?

"We believe Mr Assange has good reason to fear extradition to Sweden, as there is a strong likelihood that once in Sweden, he would be imprisoned, and then likely extradited to the United States," reads the letter signed by?the leaker of the Pentagon Papers Daniel Ellsberg,?film-maker?Michael Moore, actor and director Danny Glover, director Oliver Stone, comedian Bill Maher and author Naomi Wolf, among others.

Reuters contributed to this report.?

Children's Health & Fitness ? Weight Loss Prescription For Kids

June 28th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From NBC4?..

The Columbus Public Health Department has a program called Healthy Children, Healthy Weights and the goal is to help children make the healthiest food choices that they can.

Autumn Trombetta, Obesity Prevention Coordinator for CPH and a registered dietician goes into childcare centers across Columbus on a mission to change food options and tastebuds.

Trombetta works one-on-one with childcare center directors and teachers helping them make simple, healthy changes to the menus they offer children. She is on the front lines in the war against childhood obesity, because if she can get children enjoying healthy food at an early age, they are likely to continue making healthy choices throughout their lifetime.

More than a third of Americans are considered overweight or obese, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years.

Exploring Windows 8: What We Learned at TechEd Europe

ITProPortal has just returned from Amsterdam, having attended TechEd Europe 2012 events and Microsoft's Exploring Windows 8 workshop. We are now in the process of conducting independent testing and composing reviews on selected aspects of the next generation OS, so stay tuned.

Until then, we offer you a run-down of the five things that stood out most yesterday - for more, make sure to check out our in-depth reflections on Wednesday's events.

It's Fast

Some of yesterday's demos might have seemed a bit reductionist ? I now know half a dozen optimised ways to run my finger across a touch-screen - but the one illustrating Windows 8's boot time was genuinely eye-catching. Eight seconds from cold to start screen is immensely impressive, especially considering the task was completed on a notebook device running an old generation Sandy Bridge processor. Sure, I heard "fast and fluid" uttered one too many times for my liking - but in this case it's a spot on assessment.

Lucky Charms

It might take a while for the name to catch on, but the Charm Bar nevertheless looks like a significant improvement over the traditional Start menu. Like the replacement of folders with app groups on the main UI, Microsoft's stripped down approach is beneficial from organisational and access perspectives. Crucially, Charm Bar foregrounds Device management: cross-device connectivity is one of Windows 8's main selling points and this makes it easier than ever to project media externally via an Xbox or power up a multi-monitor work station. The Share function is also attractive.

Enterprise Features Aren't Just Lip Service

Many of the important UI changes offered by Windows 8 are noticeably pitched at the consumer market, yet the refreshed software's enterprise package is also attention grabbing. Windows Store makes downloading custom-built, Metro-style business apps a mere formality, with programs for expense management and project approval among those currently knocking about on the Release Preview. But perhaps most significantly, Secure Boot?puts into place the kind of architectually neutral platform necessary to combat new generation malware, with the public key infrastructure allowing firmware images to validate prior to execution.?

This Time, It's Personal?

Responding to user feedback, Microsoft's latest OS has more scope for customisation than ever.?Some personalisation features are nice but relatively trivial, like the ability to set different wallpaper images on multi-monitor set ups. Others, by way of contrast, are hugely relevant: users can create app-based relationships linking their files to relevant services for easy sharing and uploading, meaning Word documents can be automatically associated with native cloud service SkyDrive in the workplace, and images with?Facebook at home.

Hybrids Are The Future

Not specifically Windows 8 related, but it's something I found myself thinking time and again over the last couple of days. More than that, it's a development that the latest Microsoft computing eco-system will complement beautifully.?Tablets may be predominantly entertainment and convenience-led devices at the moment - not to mention what my mum uses because she can't get her head around full-on computing - but the reality is changing fast and the new generation of slate/notebook hybrids merge consumer and enterprise worlds in an empowering manner. Just like the OS itself, come to think of it.

Not Just Another Pasta Dish ? pantryobsession

Pasta with Anchovy Sauce

Don?t even think of the horrible hairy nondescript things they put on pizza (that my cat won?t even touch). Anchovies are wonderful and full of amazing flavour when melted into a great sauce and used in pasta.

My daughter who swears she would rather die than eat anchovies, went back for seconds and then took the left overs to school the next day for lunch.

This is a Nigella Lawson recipe but I used different pasta only because I used what I had in the pantry. It is important to use a thicker pasta so the ?sauce? coats everything. This is not really a sauce but a coating that is just amazing. I also topped this with Tallegio Cheese only because I had some and just love it but the recipe doesn?t call for it.

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 5 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 12 anchovy fillets or 1 x 60g can (total weight) in olive oil
  • 15g butter
  • Tiniest pinch ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 125ml full-fat milk
  • 500g packet bigoli, bucatini, perciatelli or linguine or other long, robust pasta
  • 1 big bunch flat-leaf parsley, chopped

Method

  1. Finely chop the onions and garlic. To be honest, I?d do this in the processor every time. It?s not just that it?s easier, but that it makes the onion meld into the sauce so well later.
  2. Heat the oil in a heavy-based pan and cook the very finely chopped onion and garlic over a low heat until you have a soft, golden mush ? about 10 minutes. Add the brown sugar (though white is fine too), stir it in and let the onion mixture cook for another minute or so.
  3. Remove the anchovies from the tin, and chop them very finely. ?Add them to the onion mush, stirring until they begin to ?melt?, then stir in the butter and the pinch of ground cloves, followed by a tablespoonful of water and when all is combined, gradually stir in the milk. When this has come together as a puree, take the pan off the heat.
  4. Meanwhile, cook the pasta in abundant salted water according to the packet instructions, removing a ladleful of cooking liquid just before you drain it.
  5. Tip the drained pasta into the anchovy and onion sauce and add the reserved cooking water to help lubricate the pasta. You may not need all of the water, so pour in gradually. Add some oil from the anchovy tin if you need it too. And, of course, if the pan isn?t big enough to take all the pasta, just put it back into the pan it was cooked in and pour the sauce over the top.
  6. Sprinkle over most of the parsley, just roughly chopped, thoroughly turning the pasta in the pan to coat each strand in the anchovy sauce. Remove to a warm bowl, sprinkle over the remaining parsley and take to the table.

What do you think? Thanks for visiting :)

Dinosaurs Might Have Had Warm-Blooded Animals' Fast Metabolism

News | Evolution

Evidence is mounting against claims that dinosaurs could not have been endothermic, including a new analysis of fossil microstructures found in ruminants, lizards, dinosaurs and crocodiles

From Nature magazine

From museums to Hollywood films, dinosaurs are portrayed as highly active animals, but how they maintained this lifestyle isn?t clear. For decades, palaeontologists have debated whether the physiology of non-avian dinosaurs was akin to that of today's cold-blooded reptiles or warm-blooded mammals. An important clue has now been uncovered ? not in Triceratops and its relatives, but in herbivorous mammals.

Palaeontologists have often examined bone microstructure in their investigations of dinosaur growth and physiology. Key to arguments on the subject are lines of arrested growth (LAGs) that represent an annual slowdown ? typically tied to a cold or dry season during which resources are scarce. These rings are seen in dinosaurs, as well as in creatures such as lizards and crocodiles, whose body temperatures are regulated by the external environment, but have not often been observed in the bones of endotherms ? creatures such as mammals that maintain high, constant body temperatures. But in a study published today in Nature, palaeontologist Meike K?hler at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Bellaterra, Spain, and her colleagues report that LAGs are present in ruminants from the tropics to the poles, greatly altering the context of the dinosaur-physiology debate.

Seasonal shut-down
Although LAGs have been found in mammalian bones before, K?hler notes, this is the most comprehensive study of the structures in modern mammals across a range of latitudes. The herbivorous, hoofed mammals all slow their growth when faced with harsh conditions. This is the best way to cope with a cold or dry season, K?hler says ? ?to shut down the energy demands of the body?. The slowdown produces LAGs, even in endothermic organisms, and is an ancient mechanism for coping with lean times.

This means that ?LAGs cannot be used as an argument that dinosaurs could not have been endothermic?, K?hler says. In fact, the type of bone tissue seen in between dinosaur LAGs indicates the animals grew rapidly and sustained high metabolic rates. Dinosaur bone tissue is indistinguishable from that of today?s endothermic ruminants, K?hler says, meaning that dinosaurs were endothermic, too.

Anatomist John Hutchinson of London's Royal Veterinary College says that the study ?puts a nail in the coffin for the idea that mammals do not routinely exhibit LAGs as a natural part of their growth?. And Hutchinson agrees that the study may help us to better understand dinosaur physiology.

Although he notes that the argument over dinosaur physiology involves a number of factors ? including histology and adaptations for rapid movement ? Hutchinson says that K?hler's study provides additional evidence for dinosaur endothermy. ?The growing weight of evidence has been winning over scientists, myself included, to the view that endothermy evolved quite early in dinosaurs and was inherited by birds,? he says

Cheaper cell phones with better signal quality: World's most powerful nanoscale microwave oscillators developed

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? A team of UCLA researchers has created the most powerful high-performance nanoscale microwave oscillators in the world, a development that could lead to cheaper, more energy-efficient mobile communication devices that deliver much better signal quality.

Today's cell phones, WiFi-enabled tablets and other electronic gadgets all use microwave oscillators, tiny devices that generate the electrical signals used in communications. In a cell phone, for example, the transmitter and receiver circuits contain oscillators that produce radio-frequency signals, which are then converted by the phone's antenna into incoming and outgoing electromagnetic waves.

Current oscillators are silicon-based and use the charge of an electron to create microwaves. The UCLA-developed oscillators, however, utilize the spin of an electron, as in the case of magnetism, and carry several orders-of-magnitude advantages over the oscillators commonly in use today.

UCLA's electron spin-based oscillators grew out of research at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). This research focused on STT-RAM, or spin-transfer torque magnetoresistive random access memory, which has great potential over other types of memory in terms of both speed and power efficiency.

"We realized that the layered nanoscale structures that make STT-RAM such a great candidate for memory could also be developed for microwave oscillators for communications," said principal investigator and research co-author Kang L. Wang, UCLA Engineering's Raytheon Professor of Electrical Engineering and director of the Western Institute of Nanoelectronics (WIN).

The structures, called spin-transfer nano-oscillators, or STNOs, are composed of two distinct magnetic layers. One layer has a fixed magnetic polar direction, while the other layer's magnetic direction can be manipulated to gyrate by passing an electric current through it. This allows the structure to produce very precise oscillating microwaves.

"Previously, there had been no demonstration of a spin-transfer oscillator with sufficiently high output power and simultaneously good signal quality, which are the two main metrics of an oscillator -- hence preventing practical applications," said co-author Pedram Khalili, project manager for the UCLA-DARPA research programs in STT-RAM and non-volatile logic. "We have realized both these requirements in a single structure."

The SNTO was tested to show a record-high output power of close to 1 micro-watt, with a record narrow signal linewidth of 25 megahertz. Output power refers to the strength of the signal, and 1 micro-watt is the desired level for STNOs to be practical for applications. Also, a narrow signal linewidth corresponds to a higher quality signal at a given frequency. This means less noise and interference, for a cleaner voice and video signal. It also means more users can be accommodated onto a given frequency band.

In addition, the new nanoscale system is about 10,000-times smaller than the silicon-based oscillators used today. The nano-oscillators can easily be incorporated into existing integrated circuits (computer chips), as they are compatible with current design and manufacturing standards in the computer and electronic device industries. And the oscillators can be used in both analog (voice) and digital (data) communications, which means smart phones could take full advantage of them.

"For the past decade, we have been working to realize a new paradigm in nanoelectronics and nanoarchitectures," said Wang, who is also a member of the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA. "This has led to tremendous progress in memory research. And along those same lines, we believe these new STNOs are excellent candidates to succeed today's oscillators."

The Committee on Space Research recently announced an award to NASA Astrophysicist Neil Gehrels for research in space science.

Neil is being awarded the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) Harrie Massey Award, honoring the memory of Sir Harrie Massey, for outstanding contributions to the development of space research in which a leadership role is of particular importance.

Gehrels, Chief of the Astroparticle Physics Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., is being honored for his pioneering contributions to gamma ray astronomy.

"I am delighted to win the Massey award," Neil said. "Swift, Fermi and CGRO all have excellent science and engineering teams which make them successful. The observatories are also all international collaborations following the COSPAR objective of cooperation between nations involved in space research."

Gehrels serves as principal investigator of NASA's Swift mission, and deputy project scientist of NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope satellite. Since its launch on November 20, 2004, Swift has greatly advanced astronomers' understanding of stupendously powerful stellar explosions known as gamma-ray bursts. Fermi launched in June 2008, and has already discovered more than two dozen new pulsars. During the 1990s, Gehrels served as the Project Scientist for the Compton Observatory which was the second of NASA's four Great Observatories and pioneered observations of the gamma-ray sky.

Gehrels earned his Ph.D. in physics from Caltech in 1981, and came to Goddard as a postdoctoral researcher in the same year. Among his many other honors, Gehrels and his Swift Science Team won the 2007 Rossi Prize from the American Astronomical Society's High-Energy Astrophysics Division.

He is also the 2005 recipient of Goddard's John C. Lindsay Memorial Award for Space Science. Gehrels was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2008. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and an Adjunct Professor of Astronomy at the University of Maryland and of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Penn State University. Gehrels was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2008 and National Academy of Sciences in 2011.

Eating garbage: Bacteria for bioremediation

Eating garbage: Bacteria for bioremediation [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 25-Jun-2012

URBANA -- A 150-foot-high garbage dump in Colombia, South America, may have new life as a public park. Researchers at the University of Illinois have demonstrated that bacteria found in the dump can be used to neutralize the contaminants in the soil.

Jerry Sims, a U of I associate professor of crop sciences and USDA-Agricultural Research Service research leader and Andres Gomez, a graduate student from Medelln, Colombia, have been working on a landfill called "El Morro" in the Moravia Hill neighborhood of Medelln, which served as the city dump from 1972 to 1984. In that period, thousands of people came to the city from the rural areas to escape diverse social problems. There was no housing or employment for them, so they made a living picking up trash from this dump and built their homes upon it.

"There are some frightening pictures of this site on the Internet," said Sims. "At one point, close to 50,000 people lived there. They grew vegetables on the contaminated soil and hand-pumped drinking water out of the garbage hill."

In recent years, the Colombian government decided to relocate the people to different neighborhoods with better conditions. Then they decided to see if it was possible to clean up the area and turn it into a park. Unfortunately, the most reliable solution -- digging up the garbage and treating it -- is not economically feasible in Colombia.

Another problem was that there were no records of exactly what was in the dump.

"Apparently, hydrocarbon compounds were one of the main sources of contamination," said Gomez. "Phenyls, chlorinated biphenyls, and all kinds of compounds that are sometimes very difficult to clean up."

Three professors from The National University of Colombia in Medellin -- Hernan Martinez, Gloria Cadavid-Restrepo and Claudia Moreno -- considered a microbial ecology approach. They designed an experiment to determine whether bioremediation, which uses biological agents such as bacteria or plants to remove or neutralize contaminants, could be used to clean the site.

Gomez, who was working on his master's thesis at the time, collaborated with them. He was charged with finding out if there were microorganisms living in the soil that could feed on the carbon in the most challenging contaminants.

This was not a trivial task. As Sims explained, "There are maybe 10,000 species of bacteria and a similar number of fungi in a gram of soil."

Gomez's work was further complicated by the fact that the material in the hill was loose and porous with air spaces and voids that resulted from dirt being thrown over layers of garbage. Because of the unusual physical structure and the contaminant levels, it was unclear if the indigenous bacterial community would be as complex, and thus as effective at bioremediation, as those normally found in soils.

Gomez analyzed bacteria at different depths in the hill down to 30 meters. He found microbial communities that appeared to have profiles typical of bacteria involved in bioremediation. The communities seemed to contain a robust set of many organisms that could be expected to weather environmental insults or manipulations.

Gomez then came to Sims's lab at the U of I on a grant from the American Society for Microbiology to perform stable isotope probing, a test to link diversity and function that he was not able to do in Colombia. Contaminants are labeled with a heavy isotope that serves as a tracer that can be detected in the end products of biodegradation.

His results confirmed that the bacterial communities had, in fact, been carrying out bioremediation functions. In collaboration with assistant professor of microbial ecology Tony Yannarell who assisted with the microbial diversity analysis, he determined that the organisms involved changed at every depth.

Based on these results, the Colombian government decided to go ahead with the bioremediation project using the indigenous organisms. One of the professors who worked on the pilot study is looking at ways to provide the microorganisms with extra nutrients to speed up the process. Another project takes a phytoremediation approach, which uses plants to absorb heavy metals.

Microsoft job posting hints at Connected Car strategy: Azure, Kinect and WP8

microsoft-job-posting-connected-car-azure-kinect-wp8

Redmond seems to have more grandiose ideas for Connected Car than it's let on before, judging from a recent help wanted ad on its site. Reading more like PR for its car-based plans, the job notice waxes poetically about using "the full power of the Microsoft ecosystem" in an upcoming auto platform with tech such as Kinect, Azure, Windows 8 and Windows Phone. Those products would use face-tracking, speech and gestures to learn your driving habits and safely guide or entertain you on the road, according to the software engineer listing. It also hints that everything would be tied together using Azure's cloud platform, so that your favorite music or shortcuts would follow you around, even if you're not piloting your own rig. All that makes its original Connected Car plans from 2009 seem a bit laughable -- check the original video for yourself after the break.

Couple humbled by community support

When Melissa Costa-Lac learned that she and her husband had won a contest for free fertility treatment, she was overjoyed.

But her joy was also tempered by the knowledge that 42 other couples who had entered the contest were once again faced with the disappointment that anyone who has been down the infertility road knows all too well.

?We are humbled by the support we have received and by the generosity of this community that we only moved to five years ago,? said Costa-Lac, 33. ?At the same time, we feel such sadness for the other couples who were not selected.?

The I Believe Video Journal Contest, sponsored by the Sher Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Las Vegas, invited infertile couples to submit a video telling their story in any way they wished as to why they deserved to win the $12,000 full cycle of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Three couples were chosen to receive treatment.

?It wasn?t hard to tell my story because it?s a pretty good story and we didn?t have to add anything to it,? said Costa-Lac who with her husband, Hong Lac, has endured four miscarriages, three failed adoptions and the devastating still-birth of their full-term son, Xakai Van Lac July 22, 2010.

Assisted by their good friend, local photographer and father of two young children, Kyle Perison, the couple made the video and submitted it.

?It?s one of those things where you either participate or you roll your eyes at it,? said Costa-Lac, a dental hygienist who was with a patient when she got the call that she and her husband had won. ?When we won, it was awesome, but the elation was followed by the sadness of? the people who did not win, and I wonder how they?re feeling.?

Costa-Lac said the response from family, friends and even strangers on the street has been overwhelmingly positive. But there have been a few negative comments, ranging from people wondering why a Canadian couple had the chance to win, to those wondering why anyone would share their story in such a public way.

Living with infertility is lonely and those who have never experienced the heartbreak of longing for a baby simply can?t begin to understand the despair that accompanies another negative pregnancy test.

In sharing their story, Costa-Lac and her husband hope they have shown other couples that they are not alone.

?People have told us to just walk away and it will happen, but I can?t just hope, I have to be proactive and at least give this a shot.?

Now that the couple?s medical records have been sent to the clinic, their next step is a consultation of up to three hours, via Skype, with Dr. Geoffrey Sher.

And, while the treatment is free, the couple will still be paying for the medications, as well as flights and two weeks of accommodation in Las Vegas.

?Less than five per cent of infertile couples get help because of the cost of treatment, so I just keep relating back to the people who didn?t win because this is another loss for them.?

Working full-time as a dental hygienist as well as working in the child care at Excel Fitness, as a nanny several evenings a week and hosting international students as a home stay family, Costa-Lac and her husband also run a health food restaurant in Penticton.

?With this opportunity, we have a year to use the treatment, so we?ll work as hard as we can to save money.?

After the death of? Xakai, Costa-Lac discovered that she has an auto-immune disorder which could interfere with a healthy pregnancy. Several friends have offered themselves as surrogates, but for now, the couple has yet to decide if they?ll take that route.

Once in Vegas, they will stay in an apartment hotel located close to the clinic that is also the temporary home for couples from around the world, seeking fertility treatment.

The couple?s Buddhist faith has been a source of support in getting them through the grief they have experienced on their journey towards parenthood.

?The hardest thing is enlightenment, but you don?t get enlightenment when things are perfect, but through the tough things that bring you to your knees.

?I feel really hopeful and I?m absolutely humbled by the people of Vernon. And if this doesn?t work, we just continue to live our lives, but I want to thank everyone for their support.?
