Next PlayStation may be called 'Orbis' not PS4

15 hrs.

Every few weeks, another round of rumors pertaining to the next PlayStation hits the streets. Either it's boring, and entirely plausible, or too fantastic to be within the realm of reality. But the most recent batch, uncovered by Kotaku, falls straight down the middle and offers the most fascinating morsels to chew on thus far.

According to their sources, the upcoming console is code-named "Orbis." (Often projects are given placeholder titles while in development, since there are sometimes multiple iterations of the Next Big Thing in progress.) But as Kotaku points out, when placed alongside the name of Sony's current handheld,?the term "Orbis Vita," or "the circle of life," emerges.

Given that connectivity among multiple devices is pushed so heavily these days, a new name makes sense. The article also points out the next iteration won't support PlayStation 3 games. It?also reminds us how the PS3 system -- which at one point was backwards compatible with PS2 games -- was dropped early in its life cycle.

So it's easy to believe Sony's desire to "start fresh," and lose PlayStation 4.

On the slightly more fantastical front: Orbis will supposedly output games at a 4096 x 2160 resolution, far higher than current HDTV sets.

There is also talk of it not supporting used games, also rumored for the Xbox 360 successor. Given how much of a headache that used game sales cause publishers -- who don't get a cut of the profits, and have attempted to leverage the loss via online passes and DLC -- it makes sense Sony would be asked to lend a hand.

Not long after its initial report, Kotaku posted illustrations from Coque Design, a firm hired to illustrate various Orbis features. The pictures have since been removed from the site.

The images prominently depict players interacting with the PlayStation Eye, which is currently part of the PS3's PlayStation Move set-up, indicating an emphasis on motion control, which MSNBC first reported last year. Most interesting is the inclusion of a?person interacting with the scene with his smartphone, perhaps as a controller.

When msnbc.com contacted Sony to confirm or deny the rumors, a representative simply said, "No comment."

Video: Cancer death rate declines

A new government report found the overall cancer death rate is falling, and the incidence of cancer deaths is declining in men and has leveled off in women. NBC?s Robert Bazell reports.

>>> as we mentioned, new numbers on cancer deaths tonight are showing something of a gender gap . the numbers are getting better for men but not as much for women. our chief science correspondent robert bazell has more for us.

>> in its annual report to the nation on cancer, the government finds that the overall death rate is falling, but not as much for women as for men. and the snenls of cancer continues to decline for men, but for women it's leveled off. no one knows all of the reasons for the trends, but in a industry report, the government emphasized that obesity and lack of exercise are increasingly recognized as major risk factors for many kinds of cancer. fully half of all cancer deaths in the u.s. could be prevented. the biggest preventable cause, not surprisingly, remains tobacco, possible for one third of cancer deaths. 189,000 a year. but obesity now accounts for one fifth or 114,000 deaths annually. many experts worry that the obesity epidemic threatens to wipe out many of the gains.

'Dancing With The Stars' Elimination: Martina Navratilova Sent Packing

After her jive, tennis superstar is first to get the boot from season 14.
By Kelley L. Carter

One down, 11 more to go.

There wasn't much shock on Tuesday night's "Dancing With the Stars" elimination show. No one wanted to be the first celebrity sent packing, and after the first nine couples were told they were safe, it came down to an unsurprising pair of duos: Landing in the bottom two were tennis superstar Martina Navratilova and her professional partner Tony Dovolani and pop singer Gavin DeGraw and his partner Karina Smirnoff.

Before it was revealed who would be going home during the first elimination show of the series' 14th season, the tennis pro said that much like when she had a bad tennis match, she was hoping that she could come back next week a victor.

Turns out, she won't have the chance. In her Monday night performance of the jive, she messed up from the start of her routine, and her score suffered for it.

"That was sad because I love your approach to the routine," judge Carrie Ann Inaba told her. Head judge Len Goodman said during the first week of the show that he thought Navratilova was elegant and refined, but didn't think her foxtrot from that first performance was "too careful."

The 55-year-old's poor performance landed her at the bottom of the leaderboard.

"It was an amazing experience. I wish it had lasted longer. I gave it everything I had, I just blew it yesterday. I wish everybody great luck," Navratilova said after being told she was going home.

Cute mini-robots compete for championship title, gladiator freedom (video)

Image
If you thought a robot fighting championship just sounds like the plot for a Hugh Jackman vehicle, you'd be partly right. We'll tell you who does have the real steel though, the plucky fellas you see above. They're competing for this year's ROBO-ONE championship, an annual competition where humanoid robots slug it out to the death (or power failure at least) held this weekend in Kawasaki, Japan. This is no toy fair either, with contestants bagging a $12,000 pot if their android-avatar wins the crown. This year, that title goes to GAROO, winning for the second time in a row by defeating Gargoyle Mini for the spoils. Rumors of LED gouging were unfounded, as you'll see in the video after the round... we mean break.

Justin Bieber Channels Justin Timberlake On 'Boyfriend'

Lead Believe single dropped at midnight on Monday.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>Tween dream swagger is all over <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>'s lead <i>Believe</i> single, <a href="/news/articles/1681595/justin-bieber-boyfriend.jhtml">"Boyfriend."</a> Taking several cues from Justin Timberlake's early post-'NSYNC work, the track amps up Bieber's credibility as a teen idol and remixes it with the type of production work longtime pop music fans can appreciate. </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:752329/cp~vid%3D752329%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A752329" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> </P><P> </P><P>Lyrically, it sounds a bit silly at times (like when Bieber proposes he and his girl eat fondue by the fire), but Bieber's delivery of the lines proves that at 18, he's willing to take the steps to progress forward in the world of pop. Sometimes it seems a little too similar to the way the other Justin delivers lines, but "Boyfriend," co-produced and co-written by Mike Posner, is light-years beyond the sugary sweet "Baby." </P><P> </P><P>The song opens pretty sparsely, with just a thumping beat, a "woo" noise and Bieber's sing-songy rap, before a guitar comes in as Bieber makes his plea to win a girl over. The chorus will have girls dancing around thanks to its bumping beat and chugging R&B-influenced instrumentation. He sings, "I could be a gentleman/ Everything you want/ If I was your boyfriend/ I'd never let you go/ I'd never let you go," before rapping, "Tell me what you like." </P><P> </P><P>Bieber uses some form of the word "swag" no fewer than four times on the track, including the somewhat perplexing line, "Swag, swag, swag on you." But regardless of what Bieber detractors might have to say, his Beliebers, who have aged right along with their idol, will appreciate his more grown-up sound on the record. </P><P> </P><P>The song officially dropped at midnight on Monday. <a href="/news/articles/1680373/justin-bieber-believe-album.jhtml"><i>Believe</i></a> will be released later this year. As for the video, his manager, Scooter Braun, tweeted that it's already in the works.</p>

&#39;Agent Vinod&#39;: Movie Review (2012)

First Look & Poster of Hindi Movie "Agent Vinod"Movie Review (2012)
Film:
?Agent Vinod?
Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Prem Chopra
Directed by: Sriram Raghavan

Rating:???????

Believe me, it?s really a small world. Even though a film purporting to be as epic in proportion as ?Agent Vinod? travels all across the world to capture some of the most never-seen spots in the world, the plot ? an intelligent clever, urbane and wry melange of Bourne and Bond, ?Farz? and ?Mission Impossible?, finally finds its most assured resting-place in apana jahaan Delhi.

The last half hour where an international terrorist outfit attempts to blow up Delhi, gets the grammar of an espionage thriller so riveting and so right, you wonder what took director Sriram Raghavan so long to get there.

?Agent Vinod? is the kind of meticulously crafted spy drama where cerebral considerations mesh into more earthy demands of commercial Hindi cinema, like item songs in smoky bars, shootouts in dust toasted-brown locations that are as treacherous as they are daunting and, wonder of wonders, a clumsily-choreographed Mujra which doesn?t quite fit into the smooth storytelling.

Smitten more than we can eschew.

From its opening in a Taliban-infested area, there is no dearth of intrigue in ?Agent Vinod?. Agents, counter-agents, moles and molls, open-air flea markets and shopping malls jostle for attention in a script that appears to know its John le Carrre as well as its Nick Carter.

Raghavan spins a delicious yarn of guns and growls, but blessedly no gadgets. The action is crackling. The soundtrack is a chirpy mix of cheesy retro (RD and Asha Bhosle ?Meri jaan tune kaha? from the film ?The Train? pops up unannounced) and contemporary techno sounds.

The plot, perched precariously on the brink of self-indulgence, never spins out of control.

Clearly Sriram and Saif adore the spy genre. We can see the fun they?ve had in doing this film. But beneath the boys-having-fun mood is an undertone of reverence for all the espionage films from our own ?Agent Vinod? in 1977 to Hollywood?s Mission Impossible series.

Holding the restless plot in place is Saif?s clenched and controlled performance. He desists from playing the spy to the galleries. He is urbane cool, yes. But he doesn?t enjoy shooting the enemies for his country and really, patriotic jingoism is left far behind in the race to save civilisation from a nuclear catastrophe. There?s a job to be done. And no room for fornication and fun.

Agent Vinod must be the only spy film from India where the Indian flag is not saluted or even mentioned in passing in hushed or shrill tones. This guy with a funny name would rather get along with the job .

Saif?s performance is unfussy, no-nonsense and largely humourless. The end-title when he attempts to do a funny song seem so out of character, you wonder why the spy is trying so hard to be comical when we like him Martini-dry .

Ambling from one exotic location to another with the irradiant Kareena Kapoor in tow, Saif is a portrait of restrained heroism. He gets much-needed support from a cast of actors who seem to have been chosen without a second option. Every player knows his job and does it without looking distracted or self-important.

Raghavan?s direction is deep-focussed on the inner world of people who live on the edge. There is no room for romance or emotions. In the only meaty sequence that she has, Kareena moves us to tears when she tells Saif she wants a normal girl?s life. Significantly Saif eats as she weeps.

No, he isn?t rude. Just honest. Life doesn?t just go on. It goes on uncaring about those moments of tearful stock-taking which moviegoers would like to think of as the essence of life.

For all its sharply-defined interludes of counter-intelligence manoeuvres, ?Agent Vinod? tends to get long-winded, though miraculously the narrative never gets out of breath. On the contrary it takes our breath away towards the end when in a climactic bomb-defusion end-game that is reminiscent of Mani Shankar?s ?16 December?.

The globally-shot material is edited by Pooja Ladha Surti with more room for the narrative to sprawl and recline than necessary. Really, how much of the disconnected derring-do can we take before we throw our hands up in unresisting surrender?

The action sequences by Peter Heins and Parvez are sometimes heart-in-the-mouth. Other times they seem to have been put together on the editing table.

Life?s like that. You are either swept away in circumstances beyond your control. Or you create situations that you choose to be swept away in.

?Agent Vinod? is not quite the overwhelming experience that you would want a global espionage thriller to be. More thoughtful than thundering, more la Carre and less Bond it nonetheless take the spy genre in Hindi to a new level of finesse. Finally, the cool quotient in Raghavan?s chic spin on the espionage thriller is so high that you forget Bond and all his bloody brothers.

Saif imparts a dry devilish dispassion to his spy?s part,. He doesn?t get time to tell Kareena how much he loves her.

That?s for the best. We already know that.

NVIDIA's GTX 680 tested in SLI and multi-display modes, loses some of its lead

Image
Just hours after our review round-up of the new GeForce GTX 680 graphics card yesterday, a Dutch site has managed to test multiple cards in different (but invariably exorbitant) SLI modes. One of the strange things we learned during our hands-on was that SLI is complicated by NVIDIA's GPU Boost technology, which causes individual cards in the same chassis to run at different clock speeds depending on their load and temperature. Fortunately, Hardware.info reports no problems with SLI whatsoever, but it also concludes that the GTX 680 doesn't scale quite as well as AMD's Radeon HD 7970 in this type of niche setup. That changes if you throw down even more money on a 5760 x 1080 triple-display rig, in which case NVIDIA takes the lead in some games, but loses in others -- leaving the two rivals closer than the single-card reviews we looked at yesterday. If horizon-filling gameplay is your thing, don't give anyone thousands of dollars until you've checked out the source link.

[Thanks, Koen]

Health Canada warns of increased risk of prostate cancer from hair ...

Posted on 22 March 2012 by admin

Taking a natural prostate pill may contribute to improved prostate health. Now, a new warning from Canada's health department recommends that men concerned about prostate health should also be wary of hair loss drugs.?

Health Canada recently completed a four-year study of the relationship between daily use of hair loss drugs and instances of prostate cancer among men aged 50 years or more. The study ultimately found that there was a small, yet significantly relevant, increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer among the men who took hair loss medication regularly.

As a result, Health Canada has taken steps to ensure the labels for relevant drugs will be updated to include these warnings.

Prostate cancer is a serious problem for men, especially as they age. The American Cancer Society estimates that one out of every six men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime. That's why it's so important for men to take steps to increase prostate health. By taking a prostate health supplement and carefully reviewing the potential side effects of medication, men may be able to reduce their risk of contracting the disease.

Job seekers getting asked for Facebook passwords

SEATTLE (AP) ? When Justin Bassett interviewed for a new job, he expected the usual questions about experience and references. So he was astonished when the interviewer asked for something else: his Facebook username and password.

Bassett, a New York City statistician, had just finished answering a few character questions when the interviewer turned to her computer to search for his Facebook page. But she couldn't see his private profile. She turned back and asked him to hand over his login information.

Bassett refused and withdrew his application, saying he didn't want to work for a company that would seek such personal information. But as the job market steadily improves, other job candidates are confronting the same question from prospective employers, and some of them cannot afford to say no.

In their efforts to vet applicants, some companies and government agencies are going beyond merely glancing at a person's social networking profiles and instead asking to log in as the user to have a look around.

"It's akin to requiring someone's house keys," said Orin Kerr, a George Washington University law professor and former federal prosecutor who calls it "an egregious privacy violation."

Questions have been raised about the legality of the practice, which is also the focus of proposed legislation in Illinois and Maryland that would forbid public agencies from asking for access to social networks.

Since the rise of social networking, it has become common for managers to review publically available Facebook profiles, Twitter accounts and other sites to learn more about job candidates. But many users, especially on Facebook, have their profiles set to private, making them available only to selected people or certain networks.

Companies that don't ask for passwords have taken other steps ? such as asking applicants to friend human resource managers or to log in to a company computer during an interview. Once employed, some workers have been required to sign non-disparagement agreements that ban them from talking negatively about an employer on social media.

Asking for a candidate's password is more prevalent among public agencies, especially those seeking to fill law enforcement positions such as police officers or 911 dispatchers.

Back in 2010, Robert Collins was returning to his job as a security guard at the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services after taking a leave following his mother's death. During a reinstatement interview, he was asked for his login and password, purportedly so the agency could check for any gang affiliations. He was stunned by the request but complied.

"I needed my job to feed my family. I had to," he recalled,

After the ACLU complained about the practice, the agency amended its policy, asking instead for job applicants to log in during interviews.

"To me, that's still invasive. I can appreciate the desire to learn more about the applicant, but it's still a violation of people's personal privacy," said Collins, whose case inspired Maryland's legislation.

Until last year, the city of Bozeman, Mont., had a long-standing policy of asking job applicants for passwords to their email addresses, social-networking websites and other online accounts.

And since 2006, the McLean County, Ill., sheriff's office has been one of several Illinois sheriff's departments that ask applicants to sign into social media sites to be screened.

Chief Deputy Rusty Thomas defended the practice, saying applicants have a right to refuse. But no one has ever done so. Thomas said that "speaks well of the people we have apply."

When asked what sort of material would jeopardize job prospects, Thomas said "it depends on the situation" but could include "inappropriate pictures or relationships with people who are underage, illegal behavior."

In Spotsylvania County, Va., the sheriff's department asks applicants to friend background investigators for jobs at the 911 dispatch center and for law enforcement positions.

"In the past, we've talked to friends and neighbors, but a lot of times we found that applicants interact more through social media sites than they do with real friends," said Capt. Mike Harvey. "Their virtual friends will know more about them than a person living 30 yards away from them."

Harvey said investigators look for any "derogatory" behavior that could damage the agency's reputation.

E. Chandlee Bryan, a career coach and co-author of the book "The Twitter Job Search Guide," said job seekers should always be aware of what's on their social media sites and assume someone is going to look at it.

Bryan said she is troubled by companies asking for logins, but she feels it's not a violation if an employer asks to see a Facebook profile through a friend request. And she's not troubled by non-disparagement agreements.

"I think that when you work for a company, they are essentially supporting you in exchange for your work. I think if you're dissatisfied, you should go to them and not on a social media site," she said.

More companies are also using third-party applications to scour Facebook profiles, Bryan said. One app called BeKnown can sometimes access personal profiles, short of wall messages, if a job seeker allows it.

Sears is one of the companies using apps. An applicant has the option of logging into the Sears job site through Facebook by allowing a third-party application to draw information from the profile, such as friend lists.

Sears Holdings Inc. spokeswoman Kim Freely said using a Facebook profile to apply allows Sears to be updated on the applicant's work history.

The company assumes "that people keep their social profiles updated to the minute, which allows us to consider them for other jobs in the future or for ones that they may not realize are available currently," she said.

Giving out Facebook login information violates the social network's terms of service. But those terms have no real legal weight, and experts say the legality of asking for such information remains murky.

The Department of Justice regards it as a federal crime to enter a social networking site in violation of the terms of service, but during recent congressional testimony, the agency said such violations would not be prosecuted.

But Lori Andrews, law professor at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law specializing in Internet privacy, is concerned about the pressure placed on applicants, even if they voluntarily provide access to social sites.

"Volunteering is coercion if you need a job," Andrews said.

Neither Facebook nor Twitter responded to repeated requests for comment.

In New York, Bassett considered himself lucky that he was able to turn down the consulting gig at a lobbying firm.

"I think asking for account login credentials is regressive," he said. "If you need to put food on the table for your three kids, you can't afford to stand up for your belief."

On Writing vs. Speaking ? Scott Berkun

Paul Graham wrote recently on his perspectives on the written vs. spoken word.

Graham admits he?s more confident as a writer than a speaker. This biases his comparisons and his essay. He?d have benefited from talking to people who he thinks are both good speakers and good thinkers (and perhaps good writers) as they?d have the balanced perspective he admits he does not have. He writes:

Having good ideas is most of writing well. If you know what you?re talking about, you can say it in the plainest words and you?ll be perceived as having a good style. With speaking it?s the opposite: having good ideas is an alarmingly small component of being a good speaker.

Most writers are unable to write in plain words or unable to find good ideas. Why? I don?t know, but it?s harder than Graham suggests for most people on this planet to do. Graham has ideas and does write well in a simple style, but he?s assuming most people can do it because he can. Read the web for an hour: this is not the case. It?s splitting hairs to argue over whether there is more bad writing or bad speaking on planet earth since there is so much of both.

Speaking is harder in many ways than writing because it is performance. You have to do it live. Some people who do not like to perform try to do what Graham does: they try to memorize their way through it, which doesn?t work. You tend to fail when using a method for one form in another form. Performance means there is no undo and no revision, which is a huge part of the appeal of seeing bands and people do things live and in person. It?s why I?m paid more as a speaker than I am as a writer:??the same was true for Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and even David Sedaris or Malcolm Gladwell.

Writing is harder in some ways than speaking. Writing must be self contained: there is no body language or vocal?emphasis as everything must be in the words themselves. But the ability to revise and edit dozens of times narrows the gap. With enough work you can revise your way into competence. Yet speaking is performance: there is no revision of an event. You can perform it again to improve on mistakes, but each instance must be done every time. When you finish an essay, it is done forever.

Graham writes:

With speaking it?s the opposite: having good ideas is an alarmingly small component of being a good speaker.?I first noticed this at a conference several years ago. There was another speaker who was much better than me. He had all of us roaring with laughter. I seemed awkward and halting by comparison. Afterward I put my talk online like I usually do. As I was doing it I tried to imagine what a transcript of the other guy?s talk would be like, and it was only then I realized he hadn?t said very much.

This confuses entertainment with expression. Popular writing can be?similarly?hijacked ? look at twitter and the web ? all media has this problem. There are different tricks to use in each form, but an essay can make you laugh, or make you angry, or make you hit the Facebook like button, despite not saying much, or anything at all.

I do agree with Graham that some speakers and ?thinkers? are popular solely because they are?likable?and entertain, or?infuriate?and inflame. But this is a failing of all mediums, including writing.

Graham continues:

?A few years later I heard a talk by someone who was not merely a better speaker than me, but a famous speaker. Boy was he good. So I decided I?d pay close attention to what he said, to learn how he did it. After about ten sentences I found myself thinking ?I don?t want to be a good speaker.??Being a really good speaker is not merely orthogonal to having good ideas, but in many ways pushes you in the opposite direction.

Wow.

Emerson, Gandhi, Churchill, MLK, Jesus, Socrates, Lincoln, Mandala. These are a handful of great thinkers who used speaking as a primary medium of expression.

It?s true that much of what some of them spoke was heavily written before it was spoken, but the world experienced these ideas first as spoken words.

I have to stop here to acknowledge that the history of thinking was spoken. The Ancient Greeks, where many of our big ideas still come from, talked. Writing as a primary way to express ideas wouldn?t arrive for 1500 years. Talking and thinking have a much older relationship than writing and thinking. That doesn?t mean speaking is better ? writing has many advantages ? but to sweep speaking aside is foolish, and reflects Graham?s bias more than his wisdom. ?Many ideas at many startups are discovered, shared and developed through spoken words. Pitch meetings, arguments at whiteboards, late night hacking sessions, discussions over lunch: it?s heavily spoken word. Life is mostly spoken, not written.

Graham continues:

The way to get the attention of an audience is to give them?your?full attention, and when you?re delivering a prewritten talk your attention is always divided between the audience and the talk?even if you?ve memorized it. If you want to engage an audience it?s better start with no more than an outline of what you want to say and?ad lib the individual sentences.

This is where Graham, whose work I admire, makes a big mistake. He has admitted he?s not a good speaker and doesn?t like the form. Why then does he feel qualified to give advice on how to do it well?

In my bestseller? The Confessions of a Public Speaker?I carefully explain audience attention depends on answering questions they came to hear. The majority of speakers fail at this, focusing on what they themselves wish to speak about, or what their slides will look like, rather than their audience. Speaking, like writing, is an ego trap. It?s not about you, it?s about them: what questions do they want answered? What stories did they come to hear? If you understand why your audience showed up at all, and deliver on it, you will keep their attention. Graham?s advice is all about the speaker, but that?s the common tragedy ? it?s not about speaker. A speaker who studies the audience and puts together content that addresses their interests will always do well. They?re rare.

?Before I give a talk I can usually be found sitting in a corner somewhere with a copy printed out on paper, trying to rehearse it in my head. But I always end up spending most of the time rewriting it instead.

I would never do this. I stay up late the night before, if needed, to finish preparing. I practice the talk several times,?revising?if needed, until I?m comfortable. This comfort allows me to be fully present with an audience and not worried about my knowledge of my own material. This is also how I ad-lib or change directions based on a live audience. My?preparation?gives me the confidence to make adjustments. ?An hour before my talk I?m not thinking much about my talk at all.

I do agree with Graham in some ways. I do?prefer writing at times. But unlike Graham, I love both forms. I know I become a better writer every time I speak, and become a better speaker every time I write.

adolescent obesity, childhood obesity, Michelle obama, health ...

Mike after 8 months of low carb eating and 1-2 weekly strength sessions.

Mike after 8 months of low carb eating and 1-2 weekly strength sessions.

Thanks to Google?s key word search, I receive a half dozen interesting but frustrating articles on childhood obesity on a daily basis. Every single one of them says the same darn thing ? eat less fat, eat whole grains, exercise more, blah blah blah. Drives me nuts!

Childhood obesity is easily solved. What I mean is, there is no mystery surrounding the solution if you are up on your reading on low carb diets. It?s just a matter of obeying science. If we (Michelle Obama this means you too!) would ignore the current weight loss dogma (low fat, whole grains, swapping soda for juice, etc.) and promote a low carbohydrate, real food eating plan instead, viola! No more obese people.

And for those of you who are about to stick their thumbs in their ears, wiggle their fingers and scream at me: ?But Fred! What about all the people who eat lots of carbs like the Kitavans and aren?t fat! So there!? let me say this: I don?t give a hoot about them.

FACT: The only way you can become obese is by eating lots of carbs. If you don?t, you can?t, as in CAN?T.

As for exercise, lack of exercise hasn?t a thing to do with obesity. If this was understood, there would be a lot less pressure on obese kids as well. Do fat newborns move less in the womb? Are skinny, inactive kids sneaking in hours on the treadmill when no one is looking? C?mon.

I am so sick of the nonsense, if anyone?s library would like a free copy of my book Strong Kids Healthy Kids, I?ll ship it.

I've been involved in exercise ever since I became a member of The Charles Atlas Club when I was 10 years old. In 1998, I founded and established Serious Strength on the Upper West Side of NYC. My clients include kids, seniors (and everyone in between), top CEOs, celebrities, bestselling authors, journalists and TV personalities.

Blood tests won't stop gene cheats

ATHLETES trying to cheat by loading their bodies with genes that make muscles bigger and more efficient could be caught if forced to supply muscle biopsies, but not through the analysis of urine or blood samples.

So says Mauro Giacca of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Trieste, Italy, who was asked by the World Anti-Doping Agency to look into how to screen for gene doping.

To do so, Giacca's team created mice loaded with extra copies of the muscle-boosting gene IGF-1, which codes for the protein insulin-like growth factor 1, by injecting its limbs with a virus that implants IGF-1 into muscle cells. They then tested the animals' endurance by recording how long they could swim before exhaustion. The doped mice swam for three times as long as mice that received the virus but not IGF-1.

Autopsies showed that the extra IGF-1 triggered the production of 10 times more protein than normal in the muscles. Giacca also saw activity soar in genes controlling energy production, contraction of muscles and respiration. Also detectable in the muscle were traces of the virus used to deliver the genes. However, the gene, protein and virus were undetectable in blood or urine from the mice (Human Gene Therapy, DOI: 10.1089/hum.2011.157).

Giacca doubts it is possible to achieve such results through exercise alone. So "from a muscle biopsy, it would be possible to distinguish a well-trained athlete from one who'd been gene-doping for a month", he says.

"It may be possible to look for unusual changes in gene profiles, but if this relies on muscle biopsies it won't happen," says Lee Sweeney, of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, who created the world's first IGF-1 "supermice" in 2004.

Giacca doubts whether athletes will attempt gene doping in the run-up to this year's Olympic games, because it is technically challenging, but he says they may in the future - most likely through an illegal government programme.

He is now working on a study to identify, in blood and urine, raised levels of micro RNA related to gene doping.

Mediterra home sales explode in Naples Florida | Naples, Bonita ...

Mediterra is setting the pace for luxury home sales in the Southwest Florida market, with sales of five new homes ? each priced over $1 million ? recorded in only four days and a total of eight contracts in only 15 days.

The contracts include single-family estate homes, villas and two model homes still under construction. Four of the contracts were signed on four consecutive days, according to Mark Wilson, president of London Bay Homes, which manages the sales and marketing operations at Mediterra and is the builder of two model homes that sold in rapid succession.

?These are encouraging numbers,? he said. ?We haven?t seen this type of explosive activity in some time. We believe there are two reasons: Buyers are recognizing the incredible values available now, and they also see the incomparable lifestyle offered at Mediterra.?

Sales at Mediterra have shown a steady increase since 2009, doubling from that year?s $47 million to more than $90 million in 2010. Sales in 2011 reached nearly $100 million.

Mediterra?s sales activity illustrates a trend Realtors are noticing throughout Southwest Florida ? the return of the luxury homebuyer. And many of those buyers are honing in on the 1,700-acre master-planned community, where resort-style amenities, combined with a Mediterranean ambience and a range of luxury homes by 10 custom builders, complement their lifestyles.

Mediterra offers custom single-family estate homes, villas and coach homes in several neighborhoods. Recently introduced floor plans and new pricing opportunities are designed to meet buyer?s demand for functionality, flexibility and competitive pricing, ranging from the $600,000s to more than $7 million.

Mediterra is along Livingston Road in North Naples. More than 1,000 acres of the community are dedicated to golf, parks and nature preserves, with no more than 950 planned homes.

Its member-owned amenities include 36 holes of Tom Fazio-designed golf, with membership limited to just 225 members per 18 holes. A limited number of new club memberships are available and are offered exclusively to new home purchasers.

The Club at Mediterra also offers the Golf Learning Center, featuring indoor and outdoor hitting stations, video equipment with launch monitor, a 2.5-acre short game practice complex with three greens, and a staff of certified PGA professionals.

Mediterra?s 25,000-square-foot clubhouse offers fine and casual dining. The adjoining Sports Club features five tennis courts, a fitness center with spa facilities, a swimming pool and two bocce courts.

The community?s neighborhoods, amenities and three themed parks are linked by eight miles of bicycle and walking paths.

Mediterra also offers the private 10,000-square-foot Beach Club with dining, a full bar and elevated pool and sun decks along the Gulf of Mexico.
