Arts & Humanities Reviews, March 1, 2012 ? Library Journal Reviews

OrangeReviewStar Arts & Humanities Reviews, March 1, 2012O?Connor, Anne-Marie. The Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt?s Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer . Knopf. 2012. c.400p. photogs. bibliog. index. ISBN 9780307265647. $30. FINE ARTS

The Lady in Gold by Klimt Arts & Humanities Reviews, March 1, 2012This is an extraordinary biography, not merely of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the subject of one of Gustav Klimt?s most famous paintings, but also of the work itself and the world of early 20th-century Vienna. The painting Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907) was famous before its record-?breaking purchase in 2006 at $135 million by Ronald S. Lauder for his New York?based Neue Galerie. Through her painstaking research, O?Connor (Washington Post) manages to capture the cultural, historical, and political climate that gave birth to this painting. She describes the anti-Semitism that permeated early 20th-?century Vienna and the role that Jews played (often as outsiders) in that society. Stolen by the Nazis during World War II and renamed The Lady in Gold (to avoid any hint that its subject was Jewish), the painting was at the center of an eight-year battle by Bloch-Bauer?s niece Maria Altmann to regain her family?s legacy. ?VERDICT Although the narrative is somewhat episodic, the history is fascinating. This is an essential title for readers interested in art history, European history, and Judaic studies. Highly recommended.?Herbert E. Shapiro, Lifelong Learning Soc., Florida Atlantic Univ., Boca Raton

OrangeReviewStar Arts & Humanities Reviews, March 1, 2012McLeese, Don. Dwight Yoakam: A Thousand Miles from Nowhere. Univ. of Texas. (American Music). Mar. 2012. c.232p. discog. ISBN 9780292723818. pap. $19.95. MUSIC

In spite of Dwight Yoakam?s popularity and impressive ability to cross musical boundaries, no biography has ever before been published. Award-winning music critic McLeese (New York Times Reader: Arts & Culture) fills that gap with this jaunty, affectionate, honest, and compelling book. Drawing on interviews with Yoakam and his friends and fellow musicians, McLeese guides us through Yoakam?s early years in Kentucky and Ohio in the 1970s, where his formative musical influences were country music and the Monkees, to his years in California, where he perfected his musical persona and came roaring out of the L.A. roots-punk circuit and into the national spotlight. McLeese takes us album by album from Yoakam?s firecracker debut, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. (1986), to his 2007 tribute to his mentor Buck Owens, Dwight Sings Buck. Yoakam emerges from these pages as a hard-working, honest artist, deeply committed to compositions that both preserve the heritage of country music and push its boundaries to carry the music, the tradition, and his listeners into new territories. VERDICT This lovingly crafted and compulsively readable biography is essential for fans of Yoakam and lovers of good music writing.?Henry L. Carrigan Jr., Evanston, IL

Health and Nutrition Supplements Are Huge in MLM | Health and ...

Baby boomers have long influenced the markets from baby foods to the current deluge of products for senior citizens. As the baby boomers have aged, there has been a great deal of emphasis placed on the importance of staying fit. They do not want to get old, but that is inevitable. They do want to keep in good shape as long as possible and are willing to buy the products to help them do so. Along with this has come a big influx of health and wellness products into the market place.

Such products in the health and nutrition field have become a huge part of the network marketing industry. Network marketing is now the preferred name for the long established model of Multi-level Marketing or MLM, an industry where distributors or consultants sign up and get paid on the efforts of others as they sign people up under them. A wide variety of products has been marketed in this fashion for many years, from the early days of the giants such as Amway and Shaklee to the present day when new companies start up on a regular basis.

One product being sold in increasing numbers in this industry is the liquid nutritional supplement. Dozens of different companies produce and sell similar products. They all claim health benefits as well as a way to earn money.

Senior citizens, in increasing numbers, are finding that it is necessary to supplement their retirement savings and/or social security. Most are unable to continue with the lifestyles to which they had become accustomed. It becomes essential to scale back and cut expenses. Many are turning to home based businesses as a means to earn a little extra money to make ends meet. Although most MLM companies offer the hope and possibility of great wealth, most seniors are not looking to break the bank. They simply desire to earn a little extra money.

As health and wellness expenditures are expected to grow into the trillions of dollars, the liquid nutritional supplements are in high demand and are gaining in popularity. They are sold in drug stores, grocery stores, and warehouse stores at discounted prices. Some people will still sign up with network marketing companies and buy their products at inflated prices because of the possibility of earning money in the process.

If a person likes the products, feels they are beneficial for his/her health, and does not mind spending the extra money, network marketing may be the way to go. It should be realized, however, that this can be a difficult business which has a high failure rate. It can work out as a lucrative business, but it takes a lot of work and some luck to find success in network marketing.

unitedcms.net ? Blog Archive ? Auto Insurance for Used Cars

Auto Insurance for Used Cars

All cars whether new or second hand are required to have http://autoinsurancespecialistsinc.com?>auto insurance cover. This is the reason for the existence of an array of insurance companies catering to insure second hand cars as well as new cars. Thus, the buyer of a used car must meet this obligation. However, the problem for used car owners is the state or age of the car which doesn?t make it easy for the owner to get the most advantageous auto insurance contract.

In principle, all insurance companies offer them, from the most basic liability insurance to the most comprehensive insurance for both old and new cars, but the reality is that it is more difficult to insure the used car if it is beyond 10 years old. In these cases, the normal practice is to only allow third party coverage. However, if the used car you want to insure is not very old, there will be no problem in signing the type of insurance you want irrespective of your choice of insurance.

It is likely that in the event that the owner of a used vehicle wants to insure his car for a higher amount, the insurance company decides to bring the car to an examination by an expert to know the real state. Logically, if the company senses that the technical condition of the vehicle is not very sound, they may decline the http://autoinsurancespecialistsinc.com?>auto insurance or significantly raise the premium.

So when one looks for a second hand car, and is also aware that it must be insured, it is preferable not to take risks and purchasing it from a trusted car dealer. It is worth reviewing the car with the help of a known mechanic , no matter what the vendor says.. You should also check the age of the vehicle.

Car magazines specializing in this segment periodically publish the indicative costs of cars that have acquired a certain age. It is also advisable to request a report to verify that the registration of that car is free of fines or outstanding liens. Finally, and most important point is that the car must have the original documents. This is vital to avoid any hindrances in getting the car insured by a reputable auto insurance company.

With all this properly verified, there will be no problem in getting the auto insurance that best meets the needs of the new driver for a well maintained used car. However, the market value of used cars is relatively much lower. Hence, the older the vehicle the less sense it makes to take an all risk auto insurance, as the compensation is low and the premium is high.

Android apps are pricey for a purpose; Box offers 50GB for free (Appolicious)

There may be a higher ratio of free apps in the Android Market than in the iTunes App Store, but the Android apps you do pay for are double the price of the average iPhone app. A new report from Canalys finds that the top 100 paid Android apps have an average price of $3.74 compared to $1.47 in Apple?s App Store. Canalys concludes that Android apps are too expensive, whereas Apple?s market is more controlled. This means Android?s high prices are the result of the attention-grabbing tactics an app maker needs to compete in a massive marketplace.

?That developers can apparently charge more for their apps on Android and make it into the top paid list is clearly a positive,? said Rachel Lashford, Canalys? managing director for Mobile and APAC. ?But the reality is that with fewer people willing to purchase apps on Android than on iOS today, there is more of a necessity to do so.?

Price manipulation may be a necessity for Android app makers, but it won?t necessarily earn you more income than the App Store. Data from analytics firm Flurry suggests iOS apps bring in 300 percent more revenue than their Android counterparts.

Marketing beyond price

Yet Android continues to grow, and worldwide, too. Android now accounts for the majority of downloads in the U.K., Germany and Russia, reports Xylogic. And the U.S. will be an Android nation before summer break.

A tantalizing market for any app maker, your marketing strategy must often be more creative than price manipulation alone. Online storage and collaboration company Box is giving Android users 50GB of free space in the cloud, for free and forever. That?s a 10-times increase from the standard free offering of 5GB, and comes as part of an upgrade for Box Android app users. Other new features include multiple-file uploads, threaded comments on any file and the ability to invite other people to folders. Not to be outdone, Dropbox updated its Android app to come with auto-upload functionality for photos. Automatic features are becoming popular with cloud storage services, and photos have appealed to Google+ and Apple iCloud as well.

Still, other apps turn to consumer interest as a tactic. Lookout Labs has released a string of consumer education apps to raise awareness around their Android security service, the latest is a detector for ad networks. In response to the rise in aggressive ad network behavior across Android?s marketplace, the Ad Network Detector app tells you when and how personal data is being collected and used. The app is a consumer-driven follow-up to the platform-controlled privacy protection for all apps in their respective marketplaces.

First Horses Shrunk by Warming Climate

News | Evolution

The sizes of the earliest equines followed the ancient temperatures through major climate change, adding evidence to a centuries-old evolutionary theory

Sifrhippus small ancient horsePony down: Did ancient warming shrink the earliest horses? Scientists are already noticing other animals getting smaller with contemporary climate change. Image: /Danielle Byerley/Florida Museum of Natural History

The first horses in North America would not have been able to hold their own in the Triple Crown. At just about 5.6 kilograms the Sifrhippus sandrae hoofed onto the scene some 56 million years ago about the size of a small dog.

But then a funny thing happened. In the next 130,000 years during the Paleocene?Eocene Thermal Maximum, these small equines got even smaller, reaching the tiny size of 3.9 kilograms?some 30 percent lighter than their initial heft. Just 45,000 years later, however, the genus had bulked up to seven kilograms. And the horses were not the only ones. Many other mammals in the area followed the same pattern.

These animals' sizes likely resulted from relatively rapid climate change, suggest the authors of a new study published online Thursday in Science.

The study "highlights the importance of temperature on evolution?particularly mammal evolution," says Felisa Smith, a professor of biology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, who wrote an essay on the findings in the same issue of Science. And it adds a new high-resolution tracking of body size and temperature during a crucial?and long puzzling?time in geologic history.

View a slide show of

Looking the small horse in the mouth
The researchers did not have complete skeletons to measure for all of the animals, so to track the size of the horses over time they looked at their teeth?in particular, their molars. "It turns out that teeth are much better than femurs," Smith says. A leg bone "does tell you something about size, but teeth are much better." And as far as teeth go, she says, "the best thing to know is the area of the first molar."

The teeth came from a fossil-rich area called Cabin Fork in Wyoming and are part of a substantial collection at the University of Florida built in part by study co-author Jonathan Bloch, an associate curator of vertebrate paleontology there. From the collection, the research team could estimate the size of about 44 diminutive adult horses.

Some 40 percent of other mammals in the area seem to have experienced similar shrinking and subsequent growth, notes co-author Ross Secord, a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Nebraska?Lincoln. They stuck with the small horses, however, because they had much more solid records from which to accurately date the samples.

The researchers used oxygen isotopes left by freshwater in the fossils to track mean annual temperature from when the animals had been alive. In particular, they sampled the isotopes from teeth of a large, water-dwelling mammal Coryphodon. With these isotope readings, "you get a little, tiny window as to what the temperature was at that time," Smith says.

This close reading has excited Smith and others who have been tracking animal size over the ages. "Although we knew that temperature might set a maximum for body size," Smith says, the new findings actually present a mechanism?and do so in a very detailed manner, showing "how animals responded to a particular temperature at a particular place at a particular time."

Have a take a step back and ponder carefully around the claims produced by these businesses. Will they ring true? Will they seem too good to be real? If that?s the case, they most likely are. These businesses may be nonprofit in writing but that does not mean theyre not generating using their clients. They are able to just like easily overstate their operating expenses to create their balance sheets reflect illusionary break-even margins.

One particular Fraudulent Nonprofit Debt Relief Company

At the start of 2005, the Federal trade commission had filed a complaint from the National Consumer Council, a front number of debt settlement and settlement companies, for misleading almost 45,000 clients seeking instant freedom from debt. Underneath the NCC umbrella were others with nice-sounding names like London Financial Group and Financial Save Services. Wrongly declaring that their customers debt problems could be solved by simply adding money to their accounts and becoming their services irritated your debt situation of the clients rather.

Exist Truly Legitimate Nonprofit Debt Relief Companies?

Yes, although theyre unusual. The easiest method to personally see whether a debt settlement companys legitimate or otherwise would be to request for information in the Bbb along with other similar institutions. Theyll have the ability to let you know if you will find already consumer complaints filed from the debt relief company you intend to transact with.

It might be easier to create one payment instead of several. Or enhance your income for the short term by reduction of monthly expenses. But this might set you back more with time since you are having to pay your debt off on the extended period of time. Inside a charge card debt consolidation, your average rate of interest might be reduced. All of your financial loans may also be moved to 1 single card which has a lower rate of interest compared to ones you?re presently having to pay.

Stop investing on stuff that aren?t essential. Every individual will need to define what ?necessary? means, however it may mean going for a sack lunch to operate, getting your personal coffee rather than preventing at Local cafe, and eliminating that subscription to Cinemax.

The initial step toward taking charge of the finances, would be to perform a realistic assessment of how much cash you get and just how much cash spent. Begin by listing your earnings all sources. Then, list your ?fixed? expenses individuals that are identical every month like mortgage obligations or rent, vehicle obligations, and insurance rates.

Staph Turns into Drug-Resistant Superbug on Farms

Scary antibiotic-resistant infections aren?t just lurking in the hospital anymore. They?re in gyms, at the beach, and increasingly, on the farm.

One strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) known as CC398 has been rapidly spreading through poultry and pig farms, infecting people who work with the animals around the world (up to 26.5 percent of farm workers sampled in the Neatherlands), and popping up in nearly half of all meat sampled in the U.S.

A new genetic study shows that this form of staph started out in humans as a more standard, susceptible strain. But only once it jumped to livestock did it become resistant to common antibiotics methicillin and tetracycline, according to the research, published online Tuesday in mBio, the journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

For the study, researchers sequenced the genomes of 89 samples of the strain from humans and livestock, which were collected from 19 countries on four continents. ?Retracing the evolutionary history of MRSA CC398 is like watching the birth of a superbug?it?s simultaneously fascinating and disconcerting,? Lance Price, director of Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) Center for Food Microbiology and Environmental Health in Phoenix, and study co-author, said in a prepared statement.

From the genetic data, the researchers could ascertain what this strain originally looked like?and how it spread. ?Most of the ancestral human strains were sensitive to antibiotics, whereas the livestock strains had acquired resistance on several independent occasions,? Ross Fitzgerald, of the University of Edinburgh, who reviewed the paper, said in a prepared statement.

A 2010 study sequenced strains of hospital-acquired MRSA from around the world and found that those strains, too, had acquired resistance multiple times in different geographic locations.

The detailed new study helps to clarify how this new breed of drug-resistant staph, known as livestock-acquired MRSA, has become so prevalent among livestock so quickly?after only having been spotted spreading back to humans about a decade ago. ?We can?t blame nature or the germs,? Paul Keim, director of TGen?s Pathogen Genimics Division and co-author of the study, said in a prepared statement. ?It is our inappropriate use of antibiotics that is now coming back to haunt us.?

?The most powerful force in evolution is ?selection,?? Keim said. ?And, in this case, humans have supplied a strong force through excessive use of antibiotic drugs in farm animal production.?

In the U.S. and many other countries, farmers don?t just use antibiotics to treat sick animals. Many producers feed it to their livestock in low levels as a preventive measure to keep animals that are in confined feeding operations, such as feed lots, from getting sick while being in such close proximity to one another. These low levels, however, are thought to be an excellent evolutionary pressure to select for strains that are resistant to these drugs?drugs that we also rely on to cure bacterial infections in people. [Read more about the use of antibiotics in farming in "Our Sick Farms, Our Infected Food" and "Our Big Pig Problem" in Scientific American.]

?Staph thrives in crowded and unsanitary conditions,? Price said. ?Add antibiotics to that environment, and you?re going to create a public health problem.? A new form of MRSA was reported in humans and dairy cows in 2011.

Despite the increased spread of MRSA CC398 from animals to people in Europe, genetic changes in the strain seem to inhibit its spread among humans. The next step, say researchers, will be to look more deeply into the bacteria?s genome to see what elements make it such an agile jumper among species?and what mutations could potentially make it even more so.

World News - Argentina to protest 'militarization' of South Atlantic at UN

Argentina is slamming Prince William's deployment to the Falklands. Some Argentine veterans say the move is aggressive and arrogant, but most residents on the islands are preparing to welcome the Prince. ITN's Bill Neely reports.

By msnbc.com staff

Argentina?s government plans to lodge a complaint with the United Nations over ?militarization? of the South Atlantic,?Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner announced on Tuesday.

"Malvinas is no longer an Argentine cause, it's now a Latin American cause, a global cause," Fernandez?said, calling the Falkland?Islands?by the name they're known by in Argentina.

Fernandez?said she wants peace with?in the region and "democracy and sovereignty" in the?islands,?according to an English translation published by the Buenos Aires Herald.

?

Argentina?s planned complaint to the United Nations assembly was first reported on a Twitter post by the BBC.

Prince William flies first Falklands sortie for RAF stint

Fernandez also said she would sign a decree declassifying a secret military-era report about the 1982?Falklands War. A government panel will review the Rattenbach Report, which is said to outline mistakes made by the junta at the time of the bloody conflict. The panel will decide what can remain classified, she said.

Fernandez?spoke before a diverse assembly of government and union leaders in a nationally televised address.

British diplomat: Argentina may block flights to Falklands

The announcement came as tension was resurfacing between Britain and Argentina over sovereignty of the British-ruled islands off the South American continent.

Britain has rankled Argentina on the 30th anniversary of a?war?by sending one of its most-advanced naval vessels, the HMS Dauntless destroyer, on a mission there. And on Saturday, Britain's Prince William took to the skies over the Falklands in his first sortie as a Royal Air Force search-and-rescue helicopter pilot.

Argentina to UK: Prince arriving dressed as 'conquistador'

For its part, the Argentine government has been critical of British actions. The Argentine foreign minister called Prince Williams appearance in the Falklands, as if he was arriving as a ?conquistador.?

On Tuesday, Argentina, which owns the rights to the country?s wildly popular first-division soccer league matches,?named the upcoming season in honor a naval ship sunk by British torpedoes during the conflict.

During the 74-day Falkland war, 649 Argentines and 257 Britons died. The war humiliated the military government and paved the way for Argentina?s return to democracy.

AP Source: Memphis to join Big East (AP)

Memphis is the latest school to sign up for a spot in the new Big East.

A person familiar with the decision says Memphis is joining the Big East. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because an official announcement was pending.

Memphis Athletic director R.C. Johnson said the school is holding a conference call followed by a news conference Wednesday to discuss the university's athletic affiliation.

The Tigers will join the league for the 2013-14 season and compete in all sports, becoming the fourth Conference USA team to move to the Big East in the last two months, along with Houston, Central Florida and SMU.

CBSSports.com first reported Memphis was on the verge of joining the Big East.

The Big East is trying to replace basketball powers Syracuse and Pittsburgh and West Virginia, and create a football league with at least 12 teams.

Syracuse and Pittsburgh are leaving for the Atlantic Coast Conference and West Virginia is headed to the Big 12.

Along with previously adding in December three CUSA schools, Boise State and San Diego State agreed to join the Big East in football only in 2013.

Last month, the Big East announced Navy will become a football-only member in 2015.

When West Virginia, Syracuse and Pitt are leaving is still up in the air. West Virginia has sued the Big East in an effort to join the Big 12 in 2012. The Big East filed a countersuit trying to force WVU to abide by the conference's bylaws, which require a 27-month notification period for schools to depart.

Big East Commissioner John Marinatto has said the league intends to hold West Virginia, Pitt and Syracuse until the summer of 2014.

Memphis has been trying to move from Conference USA since being snubbed when the Big East expanded in 2005, losing a long-time rivalry with Louisville. A departure now would be pricey for the Tigers. The exit fee from Conference USA for 2013-14 is $500,000 plus Memphis' share of television rights revenue, which is approximately $6.13 million, according to a league spokeswoman.

The Tigers' value to the Big East is in basketball, where the Tigers have made 23 NCAA tournament appearances with a record of 32-23. The Tigers played in the national title game in 1973 and 2008, when they lost to UCLA and Kansas respectively. They also reached the Final Four in 1985 and lost in three other regional finals.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino has been lobbying the Big East to add Memphis to help strengthen the league in basketball. Louisville and Memphis have spent years together first in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Metro Conference and Conference USA. Pitino again called out for league officials to consider Memphis after Louisville beat Memphis on Dec. 17.

"I'm just hoping the Big East gets smart and does something about that and allows them to come into the league," Pitino said. "I keep getting on the pulpit and saying this: We got hurt big time and we need Memphis. Memphis doesn't need us, we need Memphis. We need Temple. We need to build up basketball again."

With John Calipari as coach, Memphis made four straight NCAA tournament appearances between 2006 and 2009. Josh Pastner, who took over when Calipari left for Kentucky in 2009, took Memphis to the NCAA tournament last season after winning the Conference USA tournament. Memphis will be hosting Conference USA's men's and women's basketball tournaments in March.

Memphis football has played in five bowls since 2003, but all have been lower-tier games. Lately, the program has hit the skids. The Tigers haven't had a winning record since 2007.

Memphis just hired Justin Fuente as its new football coach, replacing Larry Porter who was fired after going 3-21 in two seasons. The Tigers play football at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

Counting the Cost of Business Travel

Business travel can take a huge chunk out of company budgets, especially if it?s left to employees to make their own travel arrangements. It isn?t just the fact that staff might be more inclined to go for the more expensive travel options or the most luxurious hotels if they are left to take responsibility for planning their own business trips, but also that they wouldn?t necessarily know where to go to get the best deals. In addition, of course, there is a hidden cost in terms of lost productivity when employees are engaged in making their own arrangements.

Father of abducted barista pleads for her return

AP

Alaska barista, Samantha Koenig, 18, pictured in this undated photo released by the Anchorage Police Department.

By Abby Hancock, NBC affiliate KTUU.com

Surrounded by friends, family and supporters, James Koenig has pleaded for the safe return of his 18-year-old daughter Samantha, who police in Alaska say was abducted from the coffee bar where she worked.

Surveillance video shows Samantha taken from Common Grounds Espresso in Anchorage by an armed man on Wednesday. Her father is using the scene of the crime as a meeting place for those who want to help. He says Samantha is a sweet girl, describes her as "everybody's best friend" and says he knew something was wrong when she didn't come home from work on Wednesday.

"I want to ask for her captors that they will please send my daughter home, I will give you anything in this world. Call me anonymously, you don't have to go through the police, I will meet you, I will give you whatever you want," says Koenig.

Samantha's boyfriend Dwayne says he spoke with her just minutes before she was abducted and says "everything was fine." He was supposed to give her a ride home from work.

"I had the only means of transportation for her and I got off work and went to go get her, and she wasn't there. It was a mess," says Dwayne.

There are no new details in the investigation since Friday, when APD called it an abduction. Samantha's family is offering more than $12,500 as a reward for her return and is hoping to sell green ribbons, Samantha's favorite color, to raise the reward money.

"Every day she's gone the odds are against us -- and I need the whole community to find my daughter, go door-to-door, every neighborhood. Anything suspicious, no matter how small you think it is, call the police," Koenig said. "Just please help find my daughter."

Anyone with information on the abduction is asked to call APD at 786-8900. Supporters created a Facebook page where people can download fliers and offer support. The family is accepting donations for the reward. An account is set up at Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union.

Property Management Services | Management One Property ...

Last updated 6 hours 18 minutes ago

Whether you?re hoping to turn your house into an investment property or you?re a tenant looking to move into a nicer home, you can benefit from property management services. Furthermore, if you?re a real estate agent or broker, you can also stand to gain from teaming up with a quality property management company. To learn more, keep reading:

As the owner of a property, you?ll receive the benefit of convenience when you list your home through a property management company. Your property manager will collect rent from your tenant, and in some cases, deposit it directly into your account so that you never have to oversee the financial aspects of owning an investment property. Your property manager will also serve as a filtering system for complaints or maintenance requests from your tenants, so you can remain a third party who only has to be notified for emergencies.

As a tenant, you?ll benefit from the convenience of having a property manager who is available around the clock to handle semi-emergency situations. Landlords generally have a day job that keeps them occupied, making it hard to get hold of them when an appliance stops working. A property manager, on the other hand, can take your phone call at any time and send the necessary maintenance support.

Real estate agents and brokers can financially benefit from property management services, provided the property management company offers referral fees and listing opportunities when the owner decides to sell or the tenant decides to buy. Ask your local property management company about their agent/broker services and incentives.

If you wish that life could be more convenient and lucrative, call Management One Property Management. Whether you?re an owner, potential tenant, or agent, we have services that can greatly benefit you. Visit our website or call (951) 992-1137 to learn more.?

Exclusive: Hacked companies still not telling investors (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? At least a half-dozen major U.S. companies whose computers have been infiltrated by cyber criminals or international spies have not admitted to the incidents despite new guidance from securities regulators urging such disclosures.

Top U.S. cybersecurity officials believe corporate hacking is widespread, and the Securities and Exchange Commission issued a lengthy "guidance" document on October 13 outlining how and when publicly traded companies should report hacking incidents and cybersecurity risk.

But with one full quarter having elapsed since the SEC request, some major companies that are known to have had significant digital security breaches have said nothing about the incidents in their regulatory filings.

Defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp, for example, said last May that it had fended off a "significant and tenacious" cyber attack on its networks. But Lockheed's most recent 10-Q quarterly filing, like its filing for the period that included the attack, does not even list hacking as a generic risk, let alone state that it has been targeted.

A Reuters review of more than 2,000 filings since the SEC guidance found some companies, including Internet infrastructure company VeriSign Inc and credit card and debit card transaction processor VeriFone Systems Inc, revealed significant new information about hacking incidents.

Yet the vast majority of companies addressing the issue only used new boilerplate language to describe a general risk. Some hacking victims did not even do that.

"It's completely confusing to me why companies aren't reporting cyber risks" if only to avoid SEC enforcement or private lawsuits, said Jacob Olcott, former counsel for the Senate Commerce committee. The chair of that committee, John D. Rockefeller, urged the SEC to act last year.

Stewart Baker, a corporate attorney and former assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said the SEC guidance was detailed enough that companies that know they have been hacked will "have to work pretty hard not to disclose something about the scope and risk of the intrusion."

Otherwise, "this is an opportunity for enforcement that practically hands the case to the SEC on a platter," Baker said.

Lockheed spokesman Chris Williams said hacking was covered under the company's most recent annual securities filing, which has as one of many risk factors "security threats, including threats to our information technology infrastructure, attempts to gain access to our proprietary or classified information, threats to physical security of our facilities and employees, and terrorist acts."

Williams said the May attack had "no material effect on our business."

Mantech International Corp, CACI International Inc and other defense and technology firms that have been reported by security researchers as hacking victims were likewise silent in their most recent filings. Neither Mantech nor CACI responded to interview requests.

"It's common knowledge" that most large defense contractors have been penetrated, said Olcott.

Sikorsky Aircraft, mindful of a strict New Hampshire law warning individuals at risk of identity theft, wrote to that state's attorney general in August that hackers had gotten into its system and could have accessed Social Security numbers of 55 employees who lived in the state.

Sikorsky said the employee data likely was not the hackers' target, which suggests that they might have been after designs or other trade secrets. But Sikorsky parent United Technologies Corp did not mention the May intrusion in subsequent SEC filings.

"Like other companies, our businesses are subject to (information technology) security attacks at times. We monitor systems and cooperate closely with the government when appropriate," said United Technologies spokesman John Moran.

DEARTH OF CONFESSIONS

Melissa Hathaway, a former intelligence official who led U.S. President Barack Obama's initial cybersecurity policy review and helped push the SEC to enact a disclosure policy, said she was "surprised" at the dearth of new confessions.

"The SEC division of corporate finance has an obligation to ask these companies why they didn't disclose," she said. "We need to have transparency on the state of the situation, and we need to have a national conversation regarding the near-term impact of economic espionage and the long-term health of the nation."

The SEC declined to comment. The agency's guidance officially clarifies previous policy instead of establishing a new rule, a process that takes longer and requires a vote of the commissioners. A person close to the agency said it expects fuller disclosures in annual 10-K filings that will begin appearing in volume this month.

Cybersecurity has been an increasing concern in Washington, and Obama asked during his State of the Union speech for action on legislative proposals. Security experts believe hackers are frequently targeting valuable digital information including strategic plans, blueprints and secret formulas.

But security experts in and out of government have complained for years that most companies don't disclose even very successful hacking attacks, because they never find out about them or simply don't want to spook investors, customers or business partners.

The U.S. National Counterintelligence Executive, in a landmark November report that openly accused China of sponsoring military and economic cyber espionage, said that it is hard for companies to estimate the impact of losses that might not be apparent for years.

One Pentagon contractor that did go into some detail recently about the threat was Northrop Grumman Corp, which warned: "Cybersecurity attacks in particular are evolving and include, but are not limited to, malicious software, attempts to gain unauthorized access to data, and other electronic security breaches that could lead to disruptions in mission critical systems, unauthorized release of confidential or otherwise protected information and corruption of data. These events could damage our reputation and lead to financial losses from remedial actions, loss of business or potential liability."

A few technology companies gave even more specific warnings, including Juniper Networks Inc, which makes gear for routing Internet traffic, and chip-maker Intel Corp. Intel had been one of the few to disclose a successful breach in the past, along with Google Inc, which has complained of attacks originating in China.

In a November filing, Intel repeated that hackers had gotten inside and warned that "the theft or unauthorized use or publication of our trade secrets and other confidential business information as a result of such an incident could adversely affect our competitive position and reduce marketplace acceptance of our products."

Some companies asserted that they had not been hacked, or at least averred that they had not been subject to a "material" or "catastrophic" intrusion.

Others confessed to breaches for the first time, including VeriSign and VeriFone Systems, which said it had experienced "security breaches or fraudulent activities related to unauthorized access to sensitive customer information."

The company did not respond to requests for elaboration. Point-of-sale terminals including VeriFone's models are popular targets for criminal hackers, who can tamper with them in order to record passwords and card numbers.

VeriFone has been reported as a supplier of machines to Michaels Stores Inc, a retail chain of hobbyist stores that had to replace more than 7,000 terminals last year after discovering tampering in 20 states.

Two other companies said they disclosed breaches because of the SEC guidance. Tumi Holdings, the luggage maker that is pursuing an initial public offering, said in a stock prospectus that security systems in some of its retail stores had been compromised in the past.

In an interview, Tumi Chief Financial Officer Michael Mardy said there had been no theft of a database or other massive breach. Instead, he said there had been occasions where store employees had conspired with outsiders on a small scale, for example by giving refunds to people who had not made purchases.

"We felt it was necessary to list as a risk factor because it actually is a risk factor," Mardy said.

University of Phoenix parent Apollo Group Inc, which in the past had noted attempted breaches, for the first time said some attempts had succeeded.

"We are facing an increasing number of threats to our computer systems of unauthorized access, computer hackers, computer viruses, malicious code, organized cyber attacks and other system disruptions and security breaches, and from time to time we experience such disruptions and breaches," it wrote in a 10-Q.

Apollo spokesman Rick Castellano declined to say how extensive the breaches had been. "Cybersecurity is an area of growing area of concern for all companies", Castellano said. "We devote significant resources to manage any potential threat."
