Pest ControlPortland - Don't Forget a Thorough Pest Inspection ...

It is virtually everyone's dream to own a new home. However, this dream can quickly turn into a nightmare if you are greeted by unwanted guests soon after moving in. Certain pests are notorious for being great stowaways while creating damage around the home. The previous homeowner may not have known there was a problem.

That is why it is important to get a pest inspection when buying a house. If there is any type of problem, then a thorough inspection should be able to find it. Make sure you realize a pest inspection differs from your standard home inspection though.

When it comes to pests, you do not just have to worry about the damage they can cause to your home. Some of them can also cause problems with your family member's health. For example, rats can pass along many different types of diseases and can also contaminate some of your food without anyone knowing about it.

Termites should get even more attention though. They can significantly undermine the structural integrity of a home by eating through the wood. They can do their work for many months without anyone noticing. By the time you do, it may cost you a lot of money to fix the problem.

Although they do not have as big a reputation as termites, carpenter ants can cause just as many problems. They will not eat the wood like termites, but they will excavate it which is just as damaging.

Termites, carpenter ants, and rodents are among some of the most common pests that can do damage around homes. However, they are not the only ones. Bed bugs have also been known to cause problems and can be very difficult to get rid of too. You also would not want stinging insects to have a nest somewhere inside a home you intend to buy.

In addition to getting a standard home inspection, you will also want to get a thorough pest inspection when buying a home. Take your time when finding a pest control company since there will likely be many different options depending on where you live.

Ideally, you will research long enough to find one that is highly reputable. This way, you will not need to worry as much about experiencing unforeseen problems in the future. After the home inspection is over, make sure you have the pest control expert come back every few months to ensure there are not any problems still lingering.

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich's poor showing in every Super Tuesday state except Georgia gives him an increasingly narrow path to win the nomination, one that now depends on the South.

The Gingrich campaign on Wednesday canceled plans to visit Kansas, instead zeroing in on Mississippi and Alabama, which hold primaries next week. The campaign is also looking ahead to Louisiana later this month and Texas after that, putting everything on the line in the South.

"Everything between Spartanburg (S.C.), all the way to Texas. Those all need to go for Gingrich," said campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond.

The fallout from Super Tuesday left Gingrich with little choice. Aside from the unsurprising victory in Georgia, which he represented in Congress for 20 years, he had little to cheer about.

He finished far behind Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum in the other nine states and trailed Ron Paul for fourth place in five of the races. Santorum's victories in Tennessee and Oklahoma ? two states with GOP voters similar to Georgia's ? raised doubts about Gingrich's appeal to Southern conservatives.

Santorum's campaign was quick to capitalize on his victories Tuesday night.

"And here we are in Oklahoma and Tennessee that we won fairly big. So I think we're going to do really well in the South," said Hogan Gidley, a Santorum spokesman. "Rick's values match up well with the South. His message matches up well in the South."

In Georgia, exit polls showed strong support from evangelical voters and tea party conservatives helped fuel Gingrich's victory. About 7 in 10 Georgia voters identified themselves as conservative, according to the data, and 50 percent of them voted for Gingrich. That's a contrast from exit polls in Oklahoma and Tennessee that showed Christian conservatives heavily favored Santorum.

The way these groups vote will determine the fate of the contests next week in Alabama and Mississippi.

"Santorum presents a direct challenge to the electoral coalition Gingrich put together in Georgia," said Merle Black, an Emory University political scientist. "If Santorum wins either of these states, he destroys the rationale for Gingrich's candidacy."

If Santorum were to eke out a victory in either state, the cries for Gingrich to drop out of the race would only grow louder.

"It's almost like Newt Gingrich losing Georgia. It's a death knell," Joel McElhannon, a Republican strategist in Georgia who isn't aligned with any campaign, said of the prospect of Gingrich failing to win in the two Southern states. "There's no legitimate argument for him to stay in. That doesn't mean he won't stay in. He's Newt Gingrich."

Even a poor showing next week may not force Gingrich out of the race. Much could depend on whether billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who has contributed millions to a political action committee backing Gingrich, writes yet another check.

In a radio interview Wednesday, Gingrich dismissed the idea of dropping out to help Santorum defeat Romney. "If I thought he was a slam dunk to beat Romney and to beat Obama, I would really consider getting out. I don't," he said.

At a stop Wednesday in Montgomery, Ala., Gingrich eagerly brought up his victory next door as he sought to remind voters of his frequent visits to Alabama during his two decades in Congress.

"Newt's in pretty good shape in Alabama. He really connects with people in Alabama because he's a Southerner and he talks our lingo, and because he's fearless about saying what he thinks," said Jack Campbell, a GOP political consultant in Montgomery who isn't aligned with any campaign. "People like that he's a breath of fresh air. You never know with some of the other candidates."

Gingrich's message resonated with some voters. Tim Adamson, a 55-year-old retired Alabama corrections officer, said he didn't believe a "media-anointed front-runner" would win the election and said Gingrich had more appeal in the South than Romney and other rivals.

"We're a lot more conservative down here," Adamson said.

The irony that the thrice-married Gingrich's political fate hinges on deeply conservative Southern supporters isn't lost on the voters. Yet some have grown tired of hearing about the candidate's two divorces and acknowledged marital infidelity.

"I know he has a past," said Tammara Butler, who cast her ballot for Gingrich in the Georgia primary. "But who amongst us doesn't?"

Given that almost 70% of young adults with Asperger syndrome have suffered from depression, it is vital that psychiatric care staff are aware of this so that patients are given the right treatment, reveals research from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Tove LugnegÄrd, researcher at the University of Gothenburg, has shown in her thesis that mood disorders and anxiety disorders are very common among young adults with Asperger syndrome...

Part 2: Protecting IP in Fashion and Design ? Patents, Copyrights ...

Written in coordination with Arza Gilad of arzadesign and Tudor Capusan of Tudor Law

Part 1 of this article discussed the case of arzadesign settling an intellectual property infringement case with Urban Outfitters.? Independent designers who find themselves in similar situations may want to pursue the issue and protect their IP.? So I consulted with Intellectual Property Lawyer Tudor Capusan of Tudor Law LLC and asked for his analysis of this case.? He writes:

Design Patents

Only those articles of manufacture that are new, original, and ornamental can be patented. There is a crucial distinction between design patents and utility patents.? Utility patents protect the way an article functions, while design patents protect the way a design looks.

Arza Gilad did receive a patent for her Handsfree Bracelet Clutch.? Her design patent protects the combination of the rectangular shape of the bag, the zipper look and placement, and the circular handle placement.? The zipper and handle could not be patented individually because they are not new or original on their own.? However, the combination and specific placement of those elements were enough to satisfy the statutory requirements for patentability.

Arza can now enjoy the exclusive right to use her handbag design for a period of fourteen years from the time she was granted the patent.? This market exclusivity gives her the opportunity to be the only person who can profit from her design. The cost of obtaining the patent can be recouped in far less than fourteen years. Attorney?s fees are another financial consideration, and apparently Arza decided that the fees for enforcing her design patent were less than the profits she would have lost had she allowed Urban Outfitters to sell knockoffs of her handbag design. ?Additionally, other potential infringers may have been deterred simply because they were aware that had Arza patented her design. ?Had Arza not filed her patent, Urban Outfitters and many others could have easily manufactured and sold counterfeits and knockoffs at cheaper prices, resulting in revenue losses and damage to Arza?s high-end brand.

Ultimately, designers must decide whether the cost of obtaining and enforcing the patent is worth the market exclusivity.? This decision can be difficult to make without consulting an attorney who is familiar with both processes.? Whatever the ultimate decision, many designers make their business more profitable in the short- and long-run by enforcing their intellectual property rights.

Can Trademarks and Copyrights Help?

Although trademarks do not protect the goods themselves, they can be used to protect designs indirectly.? This protection works differently from patent market exclusivity.? Trademark law gives the trademark owner the exclusive right to use a mark as an identifier of his/her goods. ?A trademarked logo, for example, proves the authenticity of an original Arza design so customers will not be confused by cheaper replicas.

Copyrighting fashion articles can be difficult because copyright law does not protect useful articles.? Hats, dresses, belts, and handbags have intrinsic utilitarian function, which can make them ineligible for copyright protection.

So while Arza could not obtain a copyright on the design of a handbag, the ornamental and artistic aspects of a handbag are copyrightable so long as they are physically or conceptually separable from its functional aspects.? Common copyrightable elements on handbags are patterns and fabrics. ?It may be possible to assert that the entire design is an original work of authorship, but copyright cases do not firmly support that conclusion.

That said, copyright law might indeed provide very strong protection to some designs.? Fabric patterns are akin to visual works of art, for which copyright protection is readily available. ?So Fashion Designer Diane von Furstenberg began copyrighting her fabric patterns in 2008 and was able to stop Target from selling her ?spotted frog? design.? See Complaint, Diane von Furstenberg Studio, LP v. Target Brands, Inc., 2008 WL 887353 (S.D.N.Y. 2008) (1:08cv00866).

In sum, copyright law protects individual design elements but does not protect the fashion article itself. Your attorney will decide whether copyright law is the best way to protect your design.

Hands-on with ZTE's quad-core tablet, the PF100

ZTE PF100

Last week at Mobile World Congress 2012, ZTE announced a lot of devices, including two LTE devices that should be coming to North America, and this 10.1-inch quad-core tablet called the PF100.

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

Beyond the quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, the ZTE PF100 will support 28 MBps HSPA+, run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and pack a 5 megapixel camera on the rear. The usual ameneties, like Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and HDMI-out are also included. Build-wise, the PF100 was reasonably slim, though heavy, and had a Xoom-style design on the rear. In addition to the PF100, ZTE also announced three dual-core LTE tablets that looked like they would work on North American bands - the V6, V8, and V96. During their press conference, ZTE confirmed that one of them would be landing in the U.S. in Q2, but didn't specify which. Sprint is already offering the suspiciously-cheap ZTE Optik; maybe the PF100 would offer a nice upper-end counterpoint.

Olympus OM-D E-M5 Micro Four Thirds camera to ship on March 31st?

If a ship date pops up on Amazon for a date in the not-so-distant future, we're typically inclined to listen up -- after all, the world's largest e-tailer probably has a fairly good idea of when its products will first leave the warehouse. This time, it's the Olympus OM-D E-M5, which just appeared on the distributor's Japanese site with an estimated release date of March 31st. There's no mention of a date on the company's U.S. site, however, so it's still unclear whether or not the Micro Four Thirds cam will hit North American shores on the 31st as well. Still, unless a trip to Japan is in the cards for the end of Q1, your best bet for getting early access to the highly-anticipated mirrorless cam would probably be to get your pre-order on at our coverage link below.
